We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Staying the course. Success takes time, takes patience and takes dedication. Most people do not achieve success overnight, so you have to be patient and focused enough to stay in it for the long run. Success is a marathon, you have to continuously grow and expand to keep up, and too many treat it like a regular race creating burnout.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sovereign Consultancy is a business development and branding firm.

There are several things that I believe set us apart from others, first being we are truly a one stop shop and we take your idea from a thought to a functioning business. Second, we love what we do, your growth is our goal and your success is our ultimate reward. Third, Sovereign Consultancy consist of professionals with verifiable work product and experience, we’re not social media gurus who have learned algorithms but lawyers, teachers, consultants and CPAs with degrees and wholly owned success businesses and brands. Fourth, legitimacy, most of the “consultants” and “mentors” people engage from social media have no business knowledge or education. They don’t run successful businesses or even own a legitimate business. They use their following to provide desperate entrepreneurs the illusion of success in order to get payment and provide them less than industry standard work and service. Fifth, our services (Branding, Marketing, Legal, etc.) are catered to our clients. This is not a one size fits all business. We tailor your plan to your needs.

I am equally proud of both finishing my law degree and owning and operating my business since the age of 21.

It has not been easy, I grew up like many; single mom, absent dad, poor rural area. First generation law student, I worked my way through college, started my business with my own money and by the grace of God succeeded. I’ve endured an array of obstacles financial hardship, losing a child, adopting my sister, domestic violence, etc. I learned to truly accept what I can’t control and to apply pressure when needed. I also learned my worth and that if I don’t value me no one else will. Overcoming challenges for me has always been a reaction of sorts, even as a kid in a prejudice area, being the only black girl in my class had more cons and pros.

Lessons I’ve learned: you can’t take everybody with you. Common sense is not common. Ignorance is a choice. Knowledge is power and education is something no one can take from you. Logic is rare, and jealousy is real.

A note to the world about my story and brand is I was not an overnight success and my business is not exclusive of my education. It’s ok to be an entrepreneur with degree(s). Your path to success will be uniquely paved for you, and no one can give you more than what you manifest for yourself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I haven’t been to many places, I’m originally from Florida and have been busy grinding, growing and being a mom.

Food, brunch at 10th and Piedmont and Forks and Flavors for sure. Pizza from Glide and Ice cream from Jakes and Cake N Shake. Dinner from Lil Peach Cobblers in Morrow and San Che’s Eatery and on Sunday BBQ from Chef Tony (SmackinBBQ).

Hangouts, etc. Piedmont Park, Six Flags, Fun Spot, honestly I enjoy just being in the city some days. Car rides through midtown or walking in the Piedmont or Peachtree area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s a number of people who have helped me achieved my success. My mom, Katrina McGee not only for the continuous love and support but for teaching us that hard work pays off and how to have a work/ life balance. My brother, Quintin Shaw for stepping up to ensure I could finish my education and for his continued love and support. My grandparents for teaching us money management and entrepreneurship. My professors at University of Central Florida and FAMU Law for my diverse education and my former employers for all the experience, encouragement and mentorship.
