Meet Alexis Mann | Wax Specialist & Beauty Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Mann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success is my ability to talk to people and put them at ease. All my clients say coming in for a Brazilian wax with me feels like coming in to talk to an old friend. I attribute my gift of gab to my years as a psychotherapist. Prior to transitioning into aesthetics full time, I owned a mental health therapy practice. Giving clients a great experience that includes great customer service in addition to performing an amazing wax service is key for me. I want all my clients to feel they’ve made a new friend when they leave my studio.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Waxing Down South is a Brazilian wax and aesthetics studio, known for hard wax Brazilians and full body waxing. I love getting to meet new people and I absolutely love making women feel their best and most confident from the inside out. My clients know they can come in and tell me anything. They lovingly call me “The Vault”. I think I can attribute that to years of being a therapist. I love that they feel so comfortable and relaxed with me. It makes the service fly by and takes the focus off any discomfort and/or awkwardness of getting a Brazilian wax. This year I added doing lash lifts and tinting to my service menu and that has been a big hit. I’m in a more rural (but growing) area and some services take longer to catch on here but I love being “the first to bring” a “big city” service to our community. Has it been easy? Heck no!! When I started, I literally had one or 2 clients a day and worried if I’d made the right decision leaving therapy. I’d talk to my honey about getting to the day that I was fully booked and how excited I’d be. Well, that came faster than I imagined. It was such a happy day too! I’m currently booking out right at a month in advance and it took less then 6 months to do. I get most of my clients by word of mouth and the rest have come from google searches. I’ve learned to practice patience with myself and to narrow my focus and do what really gives me energy and makes my heart sing. I want the world to know that you can change careers at any time and still kill it and be successful if you hone your focus on what gives your energy. Focus on yourself and keep promoting yourself no matter what others are saying or doing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m located between Chattanooga and Atlanta so there are lots of options. If my friend came to visit, first we would have lunch locally at The Sweet Table. It’s a cute boutique cafe with gourmet style grilled cheese sandwiches, salads, and soups in a modern industrial setting. We would do some shopping at one of our local female owned boutiques, Cheyenne’s is my favorite. We have tons of hiking trails so we would definitely find ourselves hiking or at a nice park. We would check out Carters Dam for sure and take some really cool instagramable pictures. We just had a new Italian restaurant (Doros) open so we would meet up with some of my local girlfriends (Leilani, Mollie, Jennifer, Brittany) for cocktails and some delicious pasta. One day, we would drive up to Chattanooga for some indoor climbing and lunch at Tupelo Honey. We would shoot over or Rome, GA to Aventin for creative cocktails, small plates, and wood grilled pizza. Overall, our week would consist of lots of delicious food, cocktails, and outdoor adventures.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a special shout-out to my honey, Herman Nesby III, he really gave me the support that I needed to pursue aesthetics full time. I had a thriving mental health therapy practice, but I was burnt out. I knew I needed a change for my own mental health’s sake but leaving the financial security of my practice was super scary. He told me if waxing and aesthetics was where I wanted to be then “run it”. Even when I was freaking out, he made sure we were good and reassured me that failing was not in me. I’d never depended on anyone and that was scary. He never made me feel like I owed him anything or questioned what I was doing. Now, I have a thriving wax and aesthetics studio that I look forward to going to everyday.
