We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Kiara Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis Kiara, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The most challenging decision I’ve had to make as a young black woman who relocated to Atlanta to find herself was to confront my own fears and societal expectations. Moving to a new city was already a significant step in my journey, but the hardest part was navigating the internal and external pressures that often come with being a woman of color.

I had to make the difficult decision to break free from the stereotypes and biases that tried to define me, and instead, define myself on my terms. This meant embracing my identity, my heritage, and my ambitions with unwavering determination.

I decided to let go of the fear of not fitting in, of being judged, and of not living up to the expectations placed upon me. It was a process of self-discovery and self-acceptance. I chose to celebrate my uniqueness, my culture, and my voice, recognizing that these aspects are my strengths and not limitations.

The journey has not been without its challenges, but making this decision has allowed me to find my own path, build a strong support network, and open doors to opportunities I never thought possible. It’s a decision that continues to shape my life, empowering me to be an advocate for change, to inspire others, and to be unapologetically myself in a world that sometimes tries to tell me otherwise. Atlanta has been the backdrop for my self-discovery, and I am proud of the decision I made to embark on this journey of empowerment and authenticity.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a vibrant fusion of my diverse experiences and my unyielding passion for self-expression. What sets me apart is my ability to weave together various art forms, seamlessly integrating my love for painting, sculpting, and music, creating a unique sensory experience for my audience. I take pride in my ability to channel my cultural heritage and personal narrative into my work, infusing each piece with a sense of resilience and celebration.

My journey to this point has been anything but easy. As a young black woman & artist polymath, I encountered numerous challenges, from societal stereotypes to self-doubt. However, through perseverance and a steadfast belief in my abilities, I learned to navigate these obstacles, using them as fuel to propel me forward. I sought solace in my community, drawing strength from the stories of other marginalized artists, and found empowerment in the creation of art that not only spoke to my truth but resonated with others who shared similar experiences.

Along the way, I learned the importance of authenticity and the power of representation. My story is not just my own; it is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the countless artists whose voices have been marginalized. Through my brand and my journey, I aspire to amplify these voices, to inspire a new generation of artists to embrace their uniqueness unapologetically.

I want the world to know that my art is a reflection of my identity, a celebration of my roots, and a tribute to the journey of self-discovery. It is a testament to the transformative power of art, the resilience of the human spirit, and the beauty of diversity. My story is a narrative of empowerment, a narrative that resonates with every individual striving to find their place in a world that often tries to confine them.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! I’ll always jump at the opportunity to give my people their flowers! Their love and belief in me have been a constant source of inspiration, and I can’t thank them enough for always embracing my passion.

To my beautiful mommy, your guidance and understanding have been a guiding light in my creative endeavors. To my big brother, Antione, your bold enthusiasm, unapologetic spirit, and shared creative spirit have been a tremendous motivator. To my Late Father, your legacy and the artistic values you instilled in me continue to drive me forward. I wouldn’t be here without your unwavering support. And last but not least, my angel in human form, Colin. Having access to your space has not only made it easier for me to create but has also given me a sense of motivation and belonging. Your kindness and willingness to share your personal sanctuary for my artistic journey is a gift I deeply cherish.

To my family and friends, your constant encouragement and belief in my abilities have given me the confidence to pursue my dreams fearlessly. You’ve been my pillars of strength.

I am deeply touched by the love and support I have received from each of you. Your presence in my life has made me a better artist and a better person. I look forward to continuing this journey with your blessings and encouragement. I love you more than words can express.
