We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis K. Turner | AKT and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis K. Turner, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from a small rural town named Wadley, GA. Growing up in the country required me to learn to have patience and be able to sit still and let things come into play. There isn’t much to do in the country besides enjoying nature’s best, so you learn to make something out of nothing and watch it unfold. This helps with my creativity and strategy for my businesses a lot. Because the town is so small and everyone knows everyone, that help me understand the development of relationships and reciprocity. You have to have a good relationship with others in order to succeed. This skills helps me exceed at being a great team player and leader. As a country girl, I learned to be quiet yet quick on my feet, or as my dad would say a humble beast. Listening and observing where the main 2 characteristics that impacted me the most as I can navigate through most situations from watching and giving proper feedback. Those attributes make me comfortable to adapt to any curveball thrown in this professional and entrepreneur game.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I can honestly say that I am a woman who wears many hats in this entrepreneurial world.I feel that possessing many creative and intellectual avenues sets me apart from most. My professional life consists of being a full time paralegal/legal assistant. While getting my feet wet in the political pond by day, I am a business owner of Indy Extensions, AKT Fits, and SneakHER Closet by night. All while curating philosophy enrichment through Indy Philosophy. I have so many passions and creative visions that I don’t just limit myself to one area.

Next year I plan to attend one of my dream law schools and fulfill my legal dreams of being an attorney and owning my own law firm. As my legal dreams become on the rise, it brings me closer to my passions and why I started my businesses. Indy Extensions developed while I was an undergraduate at The University of Georgia. I wanted to start a hair extension company that would be affordable for college students like me. After I graduated, I got serious with the concept and took the steps necessary to make it happen. It wasn’t easy at first trying to balance school and run a hair line.Luckily working for Representative Prince, I gained the right mentorship and found the perfect balance. I am most proud that Indy Extensions is an affordable luxury hair extension company that ships worldwide.

AKT Fits is a styling service that I provide. I offer consultations, personal shopping, on set styling photoshoots/events, closet revamps, and more. My clients consists of those who want to upgrade their wardrobe, closet, or look their best for an event. Styling gives me an outlet to express my creativity and build those lasting relationships with my clients to make them feel great. I feel that my style incorporates masculinity and femininity. I can walk in a room and receive positive reads across the board. That is a key component in my style.

SneakHER Closet is a business that is near and dear to me. Starting it off as just a sneaker and urban wear content page, but it soon expanded to merchandise and a lifestyle. Being a #sneakHERbabe allows women to express their love for sneakers and streetwear. I have always considered myself a patron of the sneaker community just based off my personal shoe collection. I started off show casing shoes from my personal collection to becoming a shoe hub that centered around female empowerment. I am most proud that woman and others use my hashtag and merchandise to show off their drip. My biggest challenge was my fear of not being able to appeal to all, but my followers and engagement from the page showed me otherwise. I am excited to say SneakHER Closet is a brand that catches the attention of the masses and never ceases to amaze me that my #sneakHERbabes show me.

Lastly, but most importantly is my philosophy enrichment brand, Indy Philosophy. Being a Political Science and Philosophy double major, Philosophy always peaked my interests. It wasn’t until I got further in my studies that I realized I loved philosophy and all of its concepts. Knowing that the philosophy department at my school didn’t have alot of light shed on it, I wanted to create a club or program that would bring awareness to this subject that I loved so much. Most don’t know, philosophy is the bases of all subjects and principles to man, but the concepts can be hard to understand. I am most proud that I’m bringing awareness to the subject in a modern way that most can relate and understand.

Although the layouts for my brands are clear now, being a visionary can be the ultimate challenge. Making sure your purpose is clear and flows can get overwhelming when trying to plan the bigger picture. I learned through this creative process that you should focus on the details because they make the bigger picture.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would visit Soigné Garden, Yebo Bach House, and Atlantic station. These places have great food with a matching aesthetic. For fun we would tour the High Art Museum, catch a good sports game depending on the season, and little Five points are always a good vibe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to say thank you to my mom. She’s been such an inspiration and support to my creative/fashion dreams since I was a little girl and I love her for that. Thank you to Representative Brian Prince for keeping me aligned in my law endeavors. His mentorship and advice has broadened my horizons in the legal arena I wish to pursue.
Lastly, I want to shout my amazing friends for EVERYTHING they do. From listening to my creative rants and all their efforts of making/supporting my dreams. Literally all their love has kept me afloat! Thank you all!
