We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexi McIntosh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Eat Well With Lex to help Black women improve their quality of life by debunking traditional wellness myths and showing them that it is easily attainable to prioritize their health and wellness.

As a Jamaican American woman who struggled with taking care of myself throughout college I saw the need for a shift in mindset regarding health and wellness for Black people, new approaches to living a wholesome life, more women of color voices in the industry as well as a break in stereotypes.

I was an African-American, first-generation college student and athlete at a PWI wanting to eat good, feel good and live good. That felt far-fetched and unattainable because I did not see anyone that looked like me doing it, I was broke and did not have access to organic foods. This inspired me to start sharing my journey on Instagram from my lifestyle practices to easy, affordable and wholesome recipes. I wanted young Black women to know that living well is attainable without eating a salad everyday, doing pilates, sacrificing flavor or emptying their pockets.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a social media content creator requires a lot of grit, discipline and patience. I am extremely proud of myself for always staying true to who I am, my mission and not getting caught up in the trends. In addition, there are so many dimensions to content creation beyond just snapping a picture and posting it on Instagram. It is a 24/7 job, and it took a lot prayer, faith and personal development get to where I am today. I’ve struggled with comparison and imposter syndrome and when your success rely primarily on an algorithm that does not always work in your favor it can become discouraging. A few things that keep me going is always reminding myself why I started Eat Well With Lex and knowing that I positively impact at least one person each day. I love what I do and nothing makes me happier than pouring love and positive energy into everyone that crosses my path. So when the likes don’t add up or a recipes fails I am grateful for the community i’ve built Beyond food, I share my experience through motherhood and my love for Jesus. I am really just trusting God to fulfill my destiny to build the platform of dreams.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a real foodie. I love to try new restaurants and do bougie things so we would be eating all the time. First we have to start with a breakfast/coffee date at For Five Coffee or A Baked Joint. If its her first time in town we most definitely have to visit a museum especially the National Museum of American History and Culture. Lunch at North Italia or Residents Cafe & Bar, hang out and shopping at the Georgetown Water Front, followed by a sushi date at OKU. Donuts from Rose Ave Bakery is a must have and there is no trip to DC without a brunch at the Unconventional Diner. Thai food is my favorite so I would take her to Sisters Thai in Alexandria VA, and end the trip with a relaxing day at The Still Point Holistic Spa.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Eat Well With Lex would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my friends, family and Instagram community. I am super grateful for all the people who have encouraged and supported me along this journey. Most importantly, I want to thank my number one supporter, best friend and lover Julian for always being my recipe critic, photographer, a shoulder to lean on, and for always driving me to show up as nothing less than my best self. He has made sacrifices to allow me to pursue this dream full time and that would never go unnoticed. Like Tabitha Brown, I’m going to retire my husband one day.
