We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexej O and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexej, what inspires you?
I am inspired by emotions that I feel and I let those feelings guide me. I have found that my best photo concepts come to me when I am feeling a strong emotion such as heartbreak or loneliness, and I have been able to channel those emotions into my art and create something meaningful that connects on a deep level with others.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that I have an ability to tell stories through my art in a way that makes you stop for a moment and think about the story of your own life. I am not only a photographer but I am a writer as well, and I like to think that my photography and writing are connected and intertwined. They are both telling the same stories and connecting to people on a personal level. I have been taking photos since I was thirteen, and have been writing since I was very young. I process my emotions through my art and writing and I think that it is evident, and it is important to me that my art resonates with other people on a deep level, beyond the thought: “oh, that’s really pretty” because it is an extension of myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them on a photoshoot trip first, take them to all of the fields along the countryside. Then later iwe could go nto the city where we could visit The Menil Collection and the Butterfly Center. If they visited during March we could go to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and spend the day at the carnival and visit the livestock, then later attend the rodeo show and whatever concert they have on that night. I would mostly love to simply walk around and take photos with my best friend, that in itself sounds like the best time ever. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout the photography community on Twitter, their presence has helped me to grow as an artist in so many ways and I am constantly in awe of their work and support.
