We had the good fortune of connecting with Aleisha Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aleisha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a mother, my business was born from a heartfelt mission – to create products celebrating diversity, specifically designed for children who share physical features similar to my children. I wanted to fill a void in the market by providing representation and inclusivity, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for black boys everywhere. My journey as a mom and entrepreneur revolves around making a meaningful impact on the lives of young kings, sending a powerful message that everyone deserves recognition, regardless of their physical appearance.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At 3 Kool Kings, we craft literature that truly resonates with the experiences and viewpoints of black boys. Our collection includes self-guided journals and affirmation cards that explore a range of essential topics like financial literacy, culture, and self-esteem. We’re firm believers that every child deserves to read books that represent and celebrate their identity.
I’m excited about the release of my fourth children’s book ‘ Do I Have To Spend My Own Money’. A book that teaches kids about the value of saving money. I believe that children should start learning about finances as early as possible.
My journey in business has been a constant battle against hurdles. At every setback, my mantra, ‘quitting is not an option,’ drove me forward. Financial struggles, doubts, and failures were roadblocks I refused to let stop me. Instead, I saw them as challenges to innovate and grow. Each obstacle became a chance to push my limits and find new solutions. Today, looking back, I see these hurdles not as barriers but as stepping stones that shaped both my business and my resilience.
At 3 Kool Kings, our mission is clear: to show the world that black boys matter. We’re here to ensure they’re not just bystanders but leaders shaping our future. Through empowerment and representation, we’re rewriting the narrative, breaking stereotypes, and inspiring these young boys to believe in their power to create change.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is more than a city to me; it’s a vibrant blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. If a friend were to visit from out of town, I’d be thrilled to share some of my favorite spots that truly capture the essence of this place.
First stop, the Atlanta High Museum, a treasure trove of art that never fails to inspire. From modern masterpieces to thought-provoking exhibits, it’s a cultural gem that showcases the diversity of artistic expression.
Then, a visit to Mary Mac’s Tea Room—an Atlanta institution serving up delicious Southern cuisine. It’s not just about the food; it’s about experiencing the warmth and hospitality that the South is known for. Sharing a meal here would be a delightful taste of the city’s rich culinary heritage.
And finally, the hiking trails! Atlanta is blessed with some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the state. Whether it’s the serene trails of Stone Mountain or the lush beauty of the Chattahoochee River, there’s something magical about exploring these scenic paths that connect us to nature.
Each of these experiences embodies a different facet of Atlanta, from its artistic soul to its culinary traditions and the breathtaking outdoors. They’re the kind of experiences that leave a lasting impression and showcase the diverse charm this city has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to the Fearless Foundation Organization. This incredible foundation has been instrumental in teaching me invaluable lessons for running my business. Through their intensive 12-week cohort program, I’ve connected with remarkable women of color who are trailblazers in their own right. Being a part of this cohort has significantly enhanced my skills and confidence in navigating the business landscape.
