We had the good fortune of connecting with AL Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi AL, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
This is something that you have to do for the love. A few people get rich in the media industry if you are lucky, but most of us are just getting by just like the rest of the world. It is a field I chose because I love what I do. Everyday I get ready to go to work it’s never a day that I say, I don’t feel like going in today because every day is different and you never know when you may break the next big story.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Videography involves capturing moving images digitally, followed by editing and sometimes production. Videographers use digital cameras and streaming devices to record various video projects, such as news coverage, podcasts, or vlogs. Unlike cinematography, which covers high-production films and commercials, videography typically focuses on smaller-scale, hands-on projects. It’s often shot guerilla-style, requiring less artistic direction and using digital cameras rather than film stock.
What really sets me apart from others is that I try to incorporate creative shots into whatever I am recording. Of course I have to have standard shots to upload for certain news entities, but I also do certain creative shots to give a different effect for the story I am trying to convey.
One of the things I am most proud of to this date are the 4 Emmys I have won for videography. Especially the Emmys for the coverage of the BLM protest in Atlanta which I won 2 Emmys and received a round of tear gas.
Professionally, videography isn’t always easy. Challenges arise, and there was a lot of trial and error along the way. Here are some lessons learned along the way:
Adaptability: Being prepared for the unexpected is crucial. Especially when dealing with breaking news. Familiarity with gear and quick thinking help capture the best shots.
Collaboration: Even in smaller teams, effective communication and collaboration matter. Clear roles and creative direction enhance the final product.
Technical Skills: Mastering video editing, and visual effects elevates your work.
Passion: Loving what you do fuels creativity and perseverance.
I just want to be able to tell stories that have some meaningful impact on the culture.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
1:Well since we are in Atlanta we have to start off going to one of the any strip clubs in town. It doesn’t matter which one as long as it is in the city limits. That is an absolute prerequisite.
2:From there we would probably hit one of the wing spots to eat. Maybe the Bando of probably JR Crickets and see if they have that lemon pepper wet. Only People from Atlanta will get that reference.
3:Next in the middle of the week I will probably like to visit one of the beach lakes like Lake Allatoona. But never Lake Lanier (people from Atlanta know why).
4:The next day will be spent at Six Flags and take in all the rides there.
5: Depending on what sports season we are in I would probably check out a baseball game at Truist Park or a basketball game down at State Farm arena.
6: Today we hit up Lenox mall and get ready to check out one of the night spots around town and party the night away.
7: Finally we end the trip with at Piedmont park and check out the sites downtown and around midtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents. They were the ones who encouraged me to follow my dreams from day one. They were always supportive and were very instrumental in helping me achieve my goals in life.
