Meet Akia Chambers: Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Akia Chambers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akia, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Most people don’t realize the harmful impact that the fashion industry has on the environment, more specifically fast fashion. The fashion industry accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions which is more than both international flights and shipping combined. In addition, more than 85% of textiles end up in landfills each year.
As a result of working in the fashion industry, I was able to see it’s negative impact on the environment first hand. So when I started my business, I knew I wanted to help change that narrative by implementing sustainable practices. To begin with, I operate my business using a made to order model. This means that nothing is made until an order is placed. This helps me to reduce overproduction and excess inventory. In addition, I make an effort to source deadstock fabrics that would normally end up in landfills. Lastly, I use eco-friendly packaging and shipping supplies that can be reused and recycled.
It’s almost impossible to run a completely sustainable business or even live a completely sustainable life but I believe that every step we take makes a difference.
So the next time you’re shopping for clothes, take a moment to consider how your decision is impacting the environment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always had an interest in fashion since a young age. So when it came time to choose a career path, I decided to pursue a degree in Fashion Merchandising. Shortly after graduating from college, I landed my dream job in corporate for a major fashion retailer in my dream city, New York.
After working at the company for a while, I realized that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life climbing the corporate ladder. Instead, I wanted to build something I could call my own. I have always been creative and have had an entrepreneurial spirit, so I wanted to use my gifts in a way to serve others. That desire led me to create my brand, Akia Nicole.
Akia Nicole is an independent slow fashion label created for women. Born out of a love for travel, I design pieces to help women feel beautiful and confident while vacationing or when they just want to feel like they’re on one. In addition, I also design one-of-a-kind pieces for special occasions.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is finding time to work on my business daily. I currently still work for a corporation, so I have to learn how to balance the two. There are days when I finish with my 9-5 and I just want to relax afterwards. However, I know that I have to push past certain feelings in order to achieve my goal of full time entrepreneurship. It isn’t always easy but I know that it’ll be worth it in the end.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When visiting ATL, I always love to tell people about Ponce City Market. There are great restaurants to try, stores to shop at, and it’s just a great place to hang out. While you’re there, enjoy a scenic walk (or scooter ride) on the belt line.
If you’re looking for some other places to explore, check out the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Georgia Aquarium.
When it comes to food, the options are limitless in the city. You’ll literally find something for whatever you have a taste for. Some of my favorite places to eat include: Pappadeaux’s, The Juicy Crab, Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Tassa’s Roti Shop & Anna’s BBQ.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost I would like to thank God. It is only by his grace that I am blessed to serve others with my creative gift. Next, I would like to thank my wonderful husband Paul and all of my family and friends that continuously encourage and support me throughout this journey.
