Meet Akevia Moné | Master Cosmetologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Akevia Moné and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akevia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business first began when I realized I could no longer depend on the owner of my previous place of employment. Over time, after working for myself and witnessing how much the industry was changing, I knew I had to take control of my future. Then, after experiencing a car accident that left me unable to work for two months, I was faced with the fear of not being able to provide for my daughter. That moment solidified my decision—I had to step out on faith and create something stable and sustainable for myself and my family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Akevia Moné, and I am the owner of The Yellow Door Salon. What sets us apart is our commitment to being a multicultural and multigenerational salon that keeps God’s children at the forefront. Many people don’t realize that the salon industry is still very much segregated, and I wanted to create a safe space where hair could thrive—no matter the texture. We specialize in healthy hair care, focusing on both the physical health of our clients’ hair and their overall well-being. Our salon is for the stylish woman who not only wants to stand out but also prioritizes her health, self-care, and confidence.
I’m most proud of being a woman of my word. While I could easily say I’m proud of my business, what truly matters to me is doing exactly what I say I’m going to do. That integrity drives everything I do, and I’m excited to see what God has planned for me next.
I’ve gotten to where I am today purely by His grace. I’ve been in the industry for over 15 years, continuously researching, learning, and studying the stylists I admire. I give credit where it’s due, cater to my clients’ needs, and truly listen to their concerns and suggestions.
Was the process easy? Not at all. But I also know it could’ve been harder. The biggest challenge I had to overcome was getting out of my own way—mentally. I had to learn how to validate myself over and over again because the mind can control you more than you realize if you let it.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is not to be afraid to ask for help. It’s easy to want to appear as if we have all the answers, but I’ve learned to be transparent about my strengths and seek guidance in areas where I need it. I’ve also learned to lean into what God is telling me to do, because everything I build is ultimately for His kingdom and glory.
What I want the world to know about me? I’m just getting started. As a single mother, my prayer is that The Yellow Door Salon will open many more doors, not just for me, but for others. I want it to be more than just a place—I want it to be an experience, a feeling, and a movement that radiates through every person we touch.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting, we’d definitely be eating good, dancing, and laughing until our cheeks hurt! First stop—somewhere that serves good, Southern home-cooked food. Nothing beats a hearty, soulful meal to start the trip off right. Then, we’re line dancing because why not? A little two-stepping, some country vibes, and just pure, carefree fun.
Other than that? We’re heading straight to the airport because the best way to enjoy ourselves is out of town! I love festivals, concerts, and random events with good people, so wherever there’s great energy, music, and a lively atmosphere, that’s where we’re going to be.
Honestly, I haven’t hung out in my area much lately—I prefer traveling overseas for a good time. It’s less hassle, more freedom, and always an adventure. Whether it’s exploring a new city, lounging on a beach, or just immersing ourselves in a different culture, that’s my kind of fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, God is responsible for it all. Every step of my journey, from family, friends, and clients to the ups and downs has played a role in shaping who I am today. I’ve never considered myself a self-made person because I know without a doubt that I wouldn’t be where I am without the village God has blessed me with.
And especially my daughter, motherhood has disciplined, molded, and checked me in ways I didn’t even realize I needed. It’s been one of my greatest teachers, revealing strengths I didn’t know I had and refining me in ways I never expected.
There isn’t just one person I want to shout out because I’d never want to leave anyone out, but to everyone who has been part of my journey, whether they’re still in my life or were only there for a season. I’m truly grateful.
