We had the good fortune of connecting with Ajaé Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ajaé, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
During the inception of my business, I was driven by a deep desire to craft not just a service or product but a genuine invitation to meaningful experiences and impactful moments. The idea germinated during a particularly challenging period for our global community—amidst the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. Witnessing the collective yearning for connection and solace, I felt compelled as an artist to contribute a beacon of light. This endeavor emerged as a personal challenge to create something novel, something beyond my comfort zone, yet rich in sensory exploration. The motivation wasn’t solely rooted in business; it was a creative response to a world seeking a sense of light during its darkest times. The decision to dive into the unknown, educate myself on unfamiliar realms, and translate that into a business concept was a deliberate act of turning adversity into an opportunity for both personal and collective growth.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In the realm of Massajaé, I weave an intricate tapestry of luxury through personally handcrafted candles, each carrying a bespoke scent meticulously blended by hand. Complementing this olfactory journey are multi-sensory events, each a unique creation with distinct themes and concepts. What sets Massajaé apart is my unwavering commitment to detail, a dedication to crafting experiences that linger in the hearts of my guests long after the event concludes.
Pride swells within me as I reflect on the challenges that have become stepping stones for personal growth. In this venture, I wear many hats, a testament to my ability to explore different facets of myself. The dynamic nature of my work keeps me on my toes, instigating a continual process of adaptation. The prospect of creating future luxurious events, fostering inspiration and freedom among my guests, excites me.
Consistency has been my compass, guiding me through the initial baby steps that now form the foundation for significant milestones. I’ve learned that focusing on one or two things, pouring time and energy into them, can unlock a multitude of doors. The journey, though demanding, has been a testament to the brainpower, motivation, and unwavering consistency that fueled my ascent. Now, I witness the seeds planted evolving into a rooted reality.
As a young Black man navigating the luxury space, I initially questioned whether I would be taken seriously and where to begin in carving my presence. The revelation came swiftly — use what you have. I am resolute in my willingness to learn, adapt, and leverage the gifts and tools bestowed upon me by a higher power. These elements, combined, create the room for Massajaé to thrive.
In essence, Massajaé is more than a company; it’s a beacon of light. We craft immersive experiences, leaving an indelible impact. The journey commenced with making candles, a humble genesis that has illuminated a path of inspiration and transformation.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my best friend comes into town for a week, I’d kick off her visit by taking her out to eat as soon as she lands. For breakfast, we’d head to Waffle House, a must since she resides in NYC, where they don’t have this gem. Post-breakfast, we’d take a walk on the BeltLine, using the opportunity to catch up on life and all the things that matter.
Later in the afternoon, after changing into a more casual outfit, we’d head to LOA Rooftop in West Midtown for drinks. Nestled against the city skyline, we’d enjoy the view, soak in the music spun by the DJ, and relish the vibrant atmosphere. Come evening, dinner would be at Gypsy Kitchen in Buckhead, rounding off the day with tapas cuisines.
The next day would kick off with a hot yoga class to invigorate our senses, followed by a post-workout smoothie at Smoothie King. Later in the day, we’d catch a movie at iPic, indulging in a dine-in experience for lunch. Continuing the adventure, we’d venture to an escape room, inviting some friends to join us and introducing them to my best friend.
Before she leaves, we’d go to a workshop, perhaps a perfume-making class. Following that, we’d attend a production show at the Fox Theatre, with a preference for something like an Alvin Ailey production. Post-show, we’d head to Kinjo for a sushi dinner and cap off the night dancing to house music at El Malo.
