We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrianna Dyson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adrianna, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I spent a lot of time at my late grandparents’ house with my older cousin. My grandmother was always sewing or doing crafts, while my grandfather was a professional painter, and my cousin was constantly drawing. I basically mirrored everything everyone around me was doing. I started drawing at a young age because of my cousin and fell in love with fashion and sewing because of my grandmother. I also enjoy painting in my spare time. So I have the three of them to thank for that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When creating, everything is based on how I’m feeling. As a Pisces, I tend to be guided by moods and accentuate my artistic visions. This reflects in my outfits, content, mood boards, paintings, and even diy pieces I create. I have a keen eye – my mother always tells me I can spot anything, even the smallest spec. So when it comes to creating or designing something, my intuition and attention to detail always come through.
I’m particularly excited about evolving in more creative spaces. Recently, I’ve been given the opportunity to be a creative director at an apparel company. I began my journey as a wardrobe stylist in 2018, but over the years, both I and my passion for styling have matured. I like to think of styling as my firstborn who has graduated from college, and now I have a new baby to raise – the role of creative director.
Growing into this new role hasn’t been easy, but I’m not a giver upper. I find new ways and ideas to improve my craft. I’m a risk-taker, so I always do what I believe is best for me, even if it may not be best for someone else. Even when faced with setbacks, I’m guaranteed to bounce back. In this industry, I’ve learned never to give up, no matter how many rejections and ‘no’s’ I encounter. I don’t like the word ‘no’ and never let being told no phase me. Instead, it ignites more motivation and courage within me to find alternative paths to ‘yes.’
I want the world to know that this is just the beginning, and they will be seeing more of me and my work. As Goapele would say, ‘I’m going higher, closer to my dream.'”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anywhere in Brooklyn. Brooklyn has so many hidden gems. Especially like where it’s at in Brooklyn it’s filled with so much culture. First we’ll hit a restaurant/bar. Depending on what type of vibe we’re looking for I’ll suggest something that has food based off our moods. For instincts if one night I’m in a more savory and salty mood we’ll go to Born Thai and order rock shrimp, chive dumplings, with crab fried rice. Have some Lychee martini’s and just enjoy the vibe. Then we’ll hit up Deia or The Se7en for a night cap. I love to go anywhere in Brooklyn where I know the people will look like me. Whether that’s an event in Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, Fort Greene Park, and Flatbush.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My tribe. If it weren’t for my family, partner, and friends turned family, I honestly don’t know where I would be.
