We had the good fortune of connecting with Adia Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adia, what do you attribute your success to?
My inspiration for putting my career as an Occupation Therapist on hold to step into the role of taking over our family business came from a deep passion for natural beauty and wellness, combined with a desire to provide high-quality, effective skincare and haircare solutions rooted in tradition. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the power of natural ingredients—many passed down through generations—used to nourish and heal both skin and hair. I wanted to bring these time-honored remedies to a broader audience while ensuring they were accessible, authentic, and made with integrity.
The experience as a Black woman business owner has certainly been a rollercoaster. Primarily because my work background was not business, it was being in the medical field. I had A LOT to learn. Regardless, it’s my mark of quality, sense of community, and commitment to education that has allowed me to progress. I take great pride in being able to create products to address the unique beauty needs of people while honoring the natural ingredients and continuing the LEGACY of my family-owned business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
RA Cosmetics is more than just a brand—it’s a legacy. As the daughter stepping in to lead the business, I am honored to continue what my father built while expanding our vision for the future. RA Cosmetics was founded on a deep commitment to providing high-quality, natural skincare and haircare products, sourcing the finest ingredients from around the world. What sets us apart is our dedication to authenticity, ensuring that every product reflects the richness of natural beauty traditions, particularly from West Africa and beyond.

One of the things I am most proud of is our ability to bring unrefined, raw, and effective beauty solutions to a global audience. From our 100% pure shea butter, raw African black soap, and turmeric-based skincare to our renowned Batana oil for hair growth, we focus on products that truly deliver results. We prioritize transparency, quality, and cultural significance, ensuring that every item we offer has a story and a purpose.

The journey to where we are today hasn’t been easy. Taking over a family business comes with the weight of expectations, the responsibility to honor its legacy, and the challenge of pushing it to new heights. There were hurdles—navigating the evolving beauty industry, building our digital presence, and ensuring we stay competitive in a fast-moving market. However, I’ve learned that challenges are just opportunities to innovate, grow, and refine our mission. By staying true to our roots while embracing modern strategies, we’ve been able to expand our reach and impact.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success in business requires resilience, adaptability, and a genuine connection with your community. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and their loyalty and trust have been instrumental in our growth.

What I want the world to know about RA Cosmetics is that we are not just selling products—we are sharing a heritage of natural beauty, wellness, and self-care. This company is a testament to my father’s hard work, and I am committed to ensuring that his vision continues to thrive. As a Black woman in the beauty industry, I take immense pride in creating space for natural, effective, and culturally rich beauty solutions that celebrate all skin and hair types.

Our journey is still unfolding, and I am excited for what’s ahead. Whether it’s through expanding our product line, growing our global footprint, or educating more people about the power of natural ingredients, RA Cosmetics is here to make an impact.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story is deeply rooted in the love, strength, and values instilled in me by my father and mother. They are the foundation of everything I do, and this journey is truly a tribute to them.

My father taught me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and integrity—lessons that have shaped the way I run my business today. His unwavering determination and entrepreneurial spirit showed me that success is built on resilience and a commitment to excellence.

My mother, on the other hand, nurtured my creativity, passion, and love for natural beauty. She introduced me to the power of natural ingredients, home remedies, and self-care rituals that have been passed down for generations. Her wisdom and encouragement gave me the confidence to turn my vision into a thriving business.

Together, my parents laid the groundwork for my values, work ethic, and purpose. Their sacrifices, support, and belief in me have fueled my journey, and I am forever grateful. Every product I create, every milestone I reach, and every impact I make in this industry is a reflection of their influence and legacy.
