We had the good fortune of connecting with Adi Devta Kaur and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adi Devta, how do you think about risk?
We make low risk decisions in search of high risk rewards, but sometimes life delivers another outcome. I would say taking risk is what got me to the place I am today. In 2020 I was enrolled in a 300 Hr Kundalini Yoga Training in Rishikesh, India (the yoga capital of the world).
I took this risk with an end goal in mind. The end goal was my students. I saw us having a yoga teacher training and changing the narrative in our communities.
I arrived to India on a leap year day, February 29th and left India later in August, a graduate of Adi Yogpeeth. This solidified the opportunity to start my very own Yoga School and curriculum. I was now a registered 500hr Yoga Instructor.
The pandemic hit the world and India was shut down. I was supposed to arrive home April 2020, instead my flight was canceled and my family frantic.
Fast forward 2022, I’ve now began the process of enrolling students in my very first 200 Hr Yoga Teacher Training.
Had I not taken the risk I would not be where I am today, with and for my community.
I believe risk should be taken. I also believe in calculated risk. I believe you should seek wise counsel if possible as it’s always wise to learn from others mistakes.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I think what sets me apart is my journey, and the process that life has opened my eyes to.
As a child I grew up in a military home. Both my Mother and Father were in the US Army. We traveled overseas and the first part of my live was in Germany. I spoke two languages before I was 10 years old!
Growing up having to relocate helped me tremendously in the life I live today.
Yoga teaches stillness. Yoga teaches the ideas of non attachment. I was being prepared for the lifestyle and I give thanks to my parents for that.
It was not easy getting to where I am, it was actually very hard. Yoga is an inner journey and facing myself for the first time was very intimidating. Sitting in dark spaces of discomfort isn’t glitter and unicorns! I learned a lot. I learned forgiveness. It’s a powerful tool. In order to move forward I needed to forgive myself and to forgive people that never said they were sorry.
My brand THEBLKYOGITRIBE is about inclusive yoga. BLK stands for breathing living knowledge. We are all BLK yogis if we chose to be. When I began yoga there were no black or brown faces teaching and definitely no students in class with me. I became a yoga teacher to share my passion and gratitude for the practice. I believe it is important for people to see someone who looks like them in the places they want to be.
Visibility is key.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d go check out an African Dance Class with Sahi On Ko Djony and grab falafel from falafel cafe.
We would check out some nature preserves and get some deep meditation in.
We would ride horses and enjoy nature.
I think we would definitely check out some sunsets over by the coke factory.
I love Indian Food so we’d go by a market and pick up grocery to make some really yummy dal.
My favorite Vegan Chef, Thyme Randle, would end the trip with some delicious treats!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, and most importantly my community. I would not be here today without the strong support system.
From the very first day that I began pursuing my divine purpose I’ve had so much love and support from my family and community.
Modupe o!
