We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaliyah Lang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aaliyah, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Black graphic designers make up less than 5% of the population. This is a troubling statistic, as it suggests that there is a lack of diversity within the field. However, black creativity has been an important force in art and design for decades, with roots that can be traced back to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Graphic design is a combination of many things, including creativity, art, influence, and passion. It’s a field that requires a deep understanding of visual communication and the ability to convey complex ideas through images and text. Despite the challenges facing black graphic designers today, there are many talented individuals, like myself, who are making important contributions to the field and helping to shape the future of design.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a creative individual, I am highly adept at expressing myself through digital art in various ways. I am not one to constrain my creativity when I am in design-mode, and this has allowed me to cultivate a unique design style that is highly appreciated by others. Despite being relatively new to the design industry, I have honed my skills through consistent practice and have developed the confidence to launch my business, Forever114Graphics, to the world in April 2023. I believe in staying true to myself and trusting the process, which has enabled me to create a brand that is focused on making a meaningful impact. It’s important to me that people understand that Forever114Graphics is not just a graphic design business, but rather a brand that is dedicated to making a positive difference in the world. I am deeply passionate about my work and am eager to see where my creative journey takes me in the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Muskegon, Michigan, I would definitely take them to a few of my favorite spots. For one thing, Lake Michigan is an absolute must-see, as it offers a stunning view of the water that draws people from all over. I would also take them to Lake Bluff Grill for a fine dining experience that they won’t forget. And if we’re in the mood for a night out, I would suggest we travel 45 minutes to downtown Grand Rapids. While Muskegon may not have as many exciting options as larger cities, we still know how to have a good time. Events like Bike Time, Party in the Park, Taste of Muskegon, and the Art Festival are all great ways to experience the area’s culture and community, especially during the summer months.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s so important to recognize the role that faith and family has played in shaping my life and helping me achieve my goals. As a graphic designer, I have a unique opportunity to use my creativity and skills to communicate important messages and inspire others. By following God’s plan and using my talents for good, I can make a real difference in the lives of others and help to create a better world. At the same time, I recognize the role that my family has played in supporting me and helping me to achieve my goals. Whether it’s through providing encouragement, guidance, or financial support, my family has been an important part of my journey. By recognizing the importance of both God and my family, I can continue to grow and thrive as a graphic designer and as a person. This shoutout is for them!
