We had the good fortune of connecting with Aala Shurbjy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aala, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was never the type of person who enjoyed the logical, “follow the rules” approach. Rules, limits, and traditions work well in specific contexts. There are limitations and expectations on how you approach clients to lose weight, increase movement, improve sleep, balance deficiencies, and change their lifestyle that did not make sense to me.

While I was managing a successful Functional Medicine practice, I was also pursuing certificates in nutrition counseling and hypnotherapy. I felt restricted in my non-traditional approach to help people remove food dependencies and decrease appetite. I took a leap of faith, and I started my own business and method that helps people completely change their relationship with food. And I never looked back!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I incorporate hypnotherapy and nutrition to help get rid of food cravings and decrease hunger. Our bodies are programmed to overeat to prepare for periods of famine and starvation. These days, we have access to plenty of food, and unfortunately, they are more addictive. Instead of telling people what to eat or how to eat, I help them reprogram their thoughts and behaviors to change their relationship with food.

I am very proud to have worked with numerous people from CEO’s to stay-at-home mom’s. I have seen success with my method, and looking forward to showing people that there is another way to feel good about your body and health.

It was not easy getting here today. I started from scratch with starting a business and learning information in my field. It took me 2 years to create my methods and learning the type of coach I am. I overcame challenges by staying consistent! No matter what, every single day I did at least one thing that helped my business or knowledge. This consistency overtime resulted in a huge difference from the entrepreneur I was 2 years ago to today. And I still have a long way to go!

I want the world to know that you do not have to fall victim to addictive foods. There is a way to get rid of your negative food cycles, and it is very non-conventional these days.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Beltline has always been my go-to place to take a person. Renting some bikes and riding through the city has always been an escape, and I love having people experience that with me. I always love a good rooftop bar as well! You have to check out Whiskey Blue for that. Sivas is one of the best hookah bars in the city. I always meet amazing people there, and really enjoy the music, food, hookah, and vibes.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I worked at Atlanta Functional Medicine for 4 years. I learned so much from the owner and one of my mentors, Dr. Elizabeth Board. She brilliantly gets to the root cause of chronic diseases including depression, autoimmune disease, gut dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and many more. She taught me that everything you put in your body and in your mind has lasting consequences, either positive or negative. I learned from Dr. Board how to find all the missing pieces of a person’s life that contribute to their current health issues. Because of her teachings, I have the knowledge and confidence to treat people with debilitating diseases using diet, lifestyle, and supplement regimens.

Dr. Matt James is one of the founders of modern NLP techniques. I took a few trainings with him and my life completely changed. NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It essentially teaches you how to reprogram thoughts and behaviors to become the best version of yourself. I use many of these techniques when I work with clients to remove food addictions and decrease appetite.
