We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Coucheron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is by Leonard Bernstein: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before”

It is something that I think about every day and it inspires me to work hard and to always improve in my profession.
I am very fortunate to have a job that has also been my passion ever since I was a child, and whereas it is not always easy and you never really put your work away, it is always worth it knowing that you have the potential to make a difference in someone’s life through emotions expressed on stage.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My family and I have had to sacrifice a lot to get to where I am today. But having said that, it was all worth it. Ever since I was about 5 years old, I had to practice for hours every single day and of course, as a kid that is not always the most fun! But my parents were always very good at making sure that there was a good balance in our household both for my brother and myself (my brother is the concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a concert violinist) My mom had a very good quote “Discipline gives freedom.’ Which is something that I think about to this day especially when I would rather watch tv or go out with my friends instead of practice!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to a nice brunch spot, one of my favorites in Atlanta is Le bon nosh in Buckhead – I love sitting outside when the sun is out. I also enjoy Piedmont Park and the Botanical Gardens so I would take them there. My favorite restaurant in Atlanta right now is Rumi’s Kitchen in Colony Square, so I would take them there for dinner and drinks. I’d also visit the High Museum and the Fernbank Museum as well as the History Center. I would also take them to a concert – Atlanta has so many wonderful options and venues for live music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom and dad have been my biggest supporters and mentors throughout my entire life, and I would not be where I am today without them!
