How do you think about work-life balance?

By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. Work-life balance has been something I’ve been really struggling with as of late. Maybe a bit more than “as of late,” to be completely honest. For the last 12 years I have selflessly devoted myself to being the best chaplain I could be. During that time I worked hard nonstop to establish myself as a trusted member of medical care teams at several hospitals. I use to have a really hard time balancing work and life and not letting them merge together. To this day it is slightly difficult because people want to know what I do on a daily basis or want to see what I wear or my workout routines. I began to become overwhelmed with feeling like I had to capture every moment I live through.I realized I had to put the camera and phone down for small moments for myself and my family or I was one day going to look up and realize I lived my life through my phone. As a young Black entrepreneur and content creator who is also a full-time college student and works part-time, finding a balance can be demanding. Balancing work, studies, and personal life can be challenging at times, and adding the additional role of being a content creator and business owner further increases the complexity of my life, however I love every bit of it. Since having kids our work/life balance has evolved quite a bit. I personally have been self-employed almost the entire time we’ve had kids and balance has changed and evolved quite a bit in that time. Our kids are 6 and 7 now. So, they’re relatively independent compared to where they were as infants. In the beginning work/life balance was basically structured by the needs of the babies. Read more>>
