By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. We’ve shared some of our conversations on the topic below.

Dominique Williams | Entrepreneur & Dessert maker

Work life balance was something I never really struggled with until my husband got out of the Navy and we had our first born son. I had a lot of free time, when he was out to sea, so I was at to maneuver at will. Once the baby came, it was like starting all over again. I had to restructure how I ran my business. I no longer had an abundance of free time so a schedule became my best friend. I had to learn the hard way where I could complete a detailed order in 1 day now took me 2 days to finish. I love the balance that a schedule gives me. I am able to dedicate the proper amount of time needed to my business while still being the Wife and Mom my family needs and deserves. Read more>>

Kim Fischer | Manifesting Coach, Radical Ritual Queen, Yoga Leader & CEO of Lotus Life Yoga Center

Finding balance isn’t the goal for me any longer. I have found over my years of yogic practice and entrepreneurship that it isn’t balance so much that I want but feeling content with my life and all of its fullness. So the question for me has become, not how can I find balance, but how can I find ease and joy? How can I feel expansive? Joy comes from discernment actually. Discernment means saying “yes” to the right thing at the right time as well as saying “no” to the right things. On the other hand, If I say “yes” to everything, I over burden myself and eventually feel burned out. This is the typical path- take on everything, loose your power, and overwhelm yourself. Terry Mott | Your friendly neighborhood tax professional & Makeup artist

We opened the doors of About Your Taxes in 2016 and initially I was still actively working in corporate America as a Sales Administrator with an international automotive group and that position was full time 40-45 hours per week. I quickly learned when going from the dealership to the tax office that I needed to find a way to build my personal business whilst still providing the same level of exceptional performance at my primary job so i began to do a split schedule at the tax office. I began going to the office on my 2 off days from the dealership and only working 3-4 nights at the tax office from 5 pm – 9 pm. I eventually got a great hold and grasp on how to manage the 2 as well as my personal life being that I was (and still happy to be) in a long term committed partnership of 6 years. Read more>>

Emilie Donaldson | Pinterest Virtual Assistant and Cat Behaviourist (Registered Veterinary Nurse)

A work life balance is something that I have only recently become tuned into, for myself, during the last two years or so. I always knew it was there of course, but had never really considered what it meant to me or asked myself the question- do I have my ideal work life balance? My first career was as a Qualified and Registered Veterinary Nurse which I absolutely adored, and also went on to complete a diploma in Feline Nursing and certificate in Zoo Nursing. I then met my partner and this is when I started to ask myself that work life balance question. He had told me early on in our relationship, that his ultimate dream was to own a home in Jersey, where we live and where I am from. Read more>>

Balance in my life has changed alot over the years, especially now with having a family. I have become more disciplined with my task and to do list. Prior to that balance back then was just like a revolving door coming in and going out if that makes sense. Currently I think about balance as an atmosphere of stability coming together being one with yourself, creating a sense of identity and structure to navigate through the day. Read more>>
