Deciding to pursue an artistic or creative career path isn’t for the faint of heart. Challenges will abound, but so many of the artists we speak with couldn’t be happier with their choice. So, we asked them about how they made the decision in the first place.

Jayaira Hargrow | Singer/Songwriter

My passion is music and I realized that singing was something I was GOING to do. I was only 7 years old when I made up my mind that being a singer was for me. The first song I ever wrote was about ‘Winnie the Pooh.’ After that, my best friend since first grade, and I created our own rendition of the Cheetah Girls. We would rehearse dances, write songs, and audition girls in our class almost every week because they wanted to be a part of our group. Read more>>

Brett Schieber | Musician (Solo Music, Mark D. Pencil and Friends Educational Music for Kids, and the Triphop Duo Arcanum)

I didn’t have a choice, really. I have to write and play music in order to keep myself happy, despite the Great Wall of Indifference, mockery, and/or lack of any remuneration. Read more>>

Erin Kirby | Singer/Songwriter

I think in a way it chose me. I have never wanted to do anything but music even as a small child. I can not imagine not doing something that allows me to express myself in a creative way. I know there are people who have a passion for other fields but for me it is something I have always done and felt a need to do. I love writing as well. It is a lot of work and takes a lot of time but it is what makes my heart happy and fulfilled. Read more>>

Growing up I always saw the world through a different eye. I would look at the shapes and colors of everything around me and saw art. Rachel Reid | Beauty Expert & Professional Makeup Artist

Truthfully, I never expected to pursue an artistic and creative career path, it sorta chose me. The story behind my career began many years ago (over 10 years), I was looking for a job and decided to go look for one at the local mall. I didn’t really want to go work at the mall because I hadn’t worked there since I was a teen and being in my early 20s that wasn’t where I wanted to work, however, I humbled myself and went anyways. I applied to a few places, then I saw a makeup kiosk and decided to ask if they were hiring, I mean what harm could it do, right?! The manager asked if I did my makeup, which I did, but I had not done others faces before and during that time makeup was very simple compared to now. Read more>>

Ed Pryor | Director & Producer

The ability and freedom to imagine something and then eventually create it is …. everything to me. Manifesting. You know, whether that is a song idea or music video concept. The complications, the compromises, building a team, whatever it may be – each body of work has a story. The process of bringing that idea into fruition is something I really enjoy. The bonus is to eventually share with others… and hopefully someone likes it. Read more>>

Tamika Shields | Photographer

I’ve always loved anything art since the day I picked up a crayon. I knew I wanted to do something related to art I just didn’t know what it would be. I majored in Graphic Design at the Art Institute of Atlanta, while I was there I also minored in photography. And that’s when I kind of fell in love with photography. But little did I know years later after graduating I would get back into photography and actually love it. Read more>>

Jacob Kaufman | Actor and Model

I chose to pursue an artistic career because I have a lot pushing me that way from inside. At a lot of jobs, unless you’re inventing something totally new, have a predisposed answer, and the job’s about finding that answer. At my previous jobs, I felt that way and that a lot of people could come in and do exactly what I did. Being an artist, I can more expressively use my voice and creativity and be exactly who only I can be. Read more>>

Tiana Melvina | Actress, Model, Owner of Tiana’s Booty Bar

I get to be whoever I want to at any point, including myself? It gets no better than being a creative to be honest. I’ve explored a few different career fields and nothing excites my heart like having a script in my hand or being on set creating. It’s a commitment to expressing whatever I want when I want, whether it’s by way of an audition or creating a new episode of Tiana’s Booty Bar (my vacuum therapy business to naturally plump booties and boobs). Atlanta is one of the best places to be. I’m excited and as Tiffany Haddish says “I’m readyyyyy”! Read more>>
