We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Crystal, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Oh yes, I wanted to help people fully understand what cancer is and not just the text book answer. By sharing the many effects/experiences that it can have on everyone and not just the person who’s actually diagnosed, I felt this would become more of an eye opener and many would have a better understanding.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Oh wow, thank you much. I’ve been in the cancer research field for 11years. My Health Information Management & Broadcast Journalism degrees from Florida A&M University helped me get to where I am in my professional career. My HIM degree helped me land my job as a cancer professional & my curiosity along with my Journalism degree helped me determine what needed to be fact checked, researched and what needed to be shared.. Sometimes I feel like I’m an Investigative Reporter in the office (LOL). It took me years to become comfortable in my work skills. Although I’ve always known what I was doing sometimes my work would be questioned, that actually made me stronger in my approach and my knowledge of work being completed. In 2019, I was nominated and later elected to be apart of the National Cancer Registrar Association as a Council on Certification Representative. Besides creating my “WE Take On Cancer” blog, becoming a rep is the next biggest moment in my professional career. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are that everything worth having is definitely worth fighting for and when one door closes in due time five more will open. You just have to keep knocking. I’d like the world to know the my brand is not just a hobby it first became part of my personal life belonging that I had many family members and friends hit with cancer & later professional life. Although I don’t know everything; I’m not here just to get clicks & likes, I want people to fully understand, be willing to express their concerns and ask questions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is really funny as I’m not the best person to create an itinerary for out of town guest. Some think I’m a bit boring. Brunch at Copeland’s of New Orleans Monday-Studio Movie Grill for lunch and a movie, Sips n Strokes painting in Sandy Springs or Painting with a Twist in Lawrenceville. Thursday-Lunch at Kingston 30 Jamacia restaurant for some authentic Jamaican dishes, Hang out in downtown Duluth. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank my mother, Carrie Mae Jordan who passed away of Breast Cancer in September 2019. She would call and ask me when I planned to “put out another post” LOL. She always said that she was proud of me for stepping out and telling people about cancer and wanted to know my thoughts on many treatments and effects they would have and why. She was a funny funny lady and always ended her calls with “See ya later kid.”
