We had the good fortune of connecting with Carra Roots and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carra, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Knowing when to evolve in your business is probably one of the most important decisions you can make to succeed. Even though “pivot” seems like a buzzword right now, it’s actually what most businesses need to do after gaining experience in their field. As for me, I began to feel like I was no longer giving my best in what I offered. Feeling unsatisfied with the deliverables or starting to not even want to show up. Not only was it a disservice to my consumers, but also to me as an entrepreneur. Taking time to reflect and strategize could be the difference of time and money in your business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Created For You Only, is a content company that helps brands connect with their audience. What sets us apart is that we offer services that fit every stage of business one may be in. Helping them with visuals, strategy, and website services. As many do but don’t realize, the things I do now, I once did for free. That made me think often that I wasn’t qualified or had imposter syndrome set in. I did so much work out of desperation that it took away my voice and gave it to the client.

If I had to shine a light on a challenge that business owners encounter, it would be making decisions. You have to decide if you are going to charge that price or not. Decide if you are going to continue to offer that or not. Then decide to stand on that. It may be uncomfortable or hard, but it’s not impossible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
RVA is such a dope area and is forever evolving. We would have to hit up some of the food spots like; Hatch Local, Mama J’s, or Croaker’s Spot. And then coming to Richmond and not checking out the art is impossible. From murals on every corner to the VMFA or the galleries along Broad St., you are going to find an interesting collection along the way. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shoutout to some of the resources that I have found in Richmond, Va. I received counseling from the Office of Minority Business Development and the Small Business Development Center. There, I had two amazing counselors Lisette and Charese that pushed and poured into me when I needed it the most. This shoutout is dedicated to them instilling in me that I am the expert and I need to position myself as such.
