We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
This is the million-dollar question and so hard to answer as a creative because I know how hard I need to work to get to where I want to be in the creative industry. Even though I have big goals for myself and my business, balance is key to preventing burnout and becoming my best self. But I have to admit, it’s become harder to balance as I have dived deeper into the industry with podcasting, writing music, and videography.

All that said, balance is complicated. But over the past couple of years, I’ve utilized a weekly planner to leave days open to relax, spend time with friends, and do things I want to do without feeling any pressure to work. On the days in between, I make a to-do list that helps me stay on top of daily tasks that help achieve the goals of my business. However, I always make time for myself every day, either before bed or first thing in the morning.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started taking photography seriously in 2010. It was mostly a glorified hobby when I first began, but I slowly but surely took a liking to capturing the world around me.

But being a creative has had its fair share of challenges. Finding your voice as an artist can be a very frustrating process, but to overcome that, I’ve reached out to my peers in the industry, done my research, trusted myself, and did the work. Some lessons learned along the way: Everyone sees the world differently, never compare yourself to others, no one does it completely alone, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and the most important: have fun.

I want the world to know that the goals of all my endeavors are to bring people together, establish community, and raise awareness to the amazing people in the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m currently in Greensboro, North Carolina. Located in the middle of the state, the big-yet-little city has a lot to offer.

On a perfect day, I’d take a morning stroll to The Green Bean coffee shop in downtown, grab a pastry from Cheesecakes by Alex next door, and go to the Greensboro Arboretum—a park full of beautiful flowers and walkable pathways through the woods.

For lunch, I’d take them to Emma Keys, which, in my opinion, has the best burger in town. Dinner at Pho Vien Huong is a must for the best curry in the the world.

Other must-see spots: Yum Yum’s for an ice cream cone, followed by a short walk to the Weatherspoon Art Museum on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s campus—which is always fun to walk around, too. There are handfuls of great breweries and bars in the city, too, but the top of my list is Oden Brewery’s jazz nights.

Other notable places in the area:

Greensboro Grasshopper Games Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have helped me on my journey so far, but my parents are the first to come to mind. Creative or not, they’ve supported everything I’ve ever tried. They’ve been, and continue to be, my loudest cheerleaders.

The second shoutout goes to Draw Your Weapons by Sarah Sentilles. I think about this book every day. It shows the parallels of art and war through the story of two people navigating the arts while being affected by war. It discusses the impact that people and art can have on society, and completely changed how I see the world and deepened my appreciation for all mediums of art.
