We had the good fortune of connecting with Busola Saka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Busola, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
As we know, success is relative. As a communicator, I firmly believe that a brand that has a defined target audience, and knows how to speak to and connect with that audience, is already successful. In launching Black Boy Thrive, I went through an exercise where I identified who my primary and secondary audiences are. This made it much easier to focus my efforts in the right place, and to determine where to spend my energy. Success is understanding that your message or brand is not for everyone, and defining your audience is key.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My experience as a communicator on various social and health campaigns made it easy to launch Black Boy Thrive. I have spent my entire career as a communicator (over 16 years), and I credit my success partly to people being willing to take a chance by hiring me, and to the professional connections I’ve made over the years. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have been so blessed with the right mentors who are always willing to guide me through career challenges. Having a mentor in your career is super important, and having mentors who support your interests outside of your career is gold.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d start with a trip to Ponce City Market, where we’d grab donuts and coffee at Five Daughters Bakery., then we’d walk the BeltLine and catch up on life! Afterwards, we’d go shopping (of course), then lunch preferably from a food truck.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many educators, parents and friends have been super supportive of Black Boy Thrive. It has been heartwarming to engage with educators and parents on social media, and to collaborate with experts who have been willing to share resources and connect me with the right people.
