Meet Elizabeth Spitdowski: Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Spitdowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved baking for myself as well for friends and family. Sugar is my love language, and it makes me so happy to share my handmade treats with others. I’ll find any excuse to bake. In college, I made cookie cakes to give away as awards at my club gymnastics competitions. As an adult anytime I found a new recipe to try out I would always bring the extra to my friends. During the holidays I am always the one in charge of dessert. I started Flippin’ Sweets ‘n Treats as a way to allow myself to bake more frequently while also bringing enjoyment to others through baked goods.

What should our readers know about your business?
Flippin’ Sweets ‘n Treats specializes in fresh, handmade treats fit for any occasion! I offer traditional, indulgent treats as well as a growing menu of “calorie-conscious” options for those who have specific nutrition goals to meet but still want to enjoy their sweets. I am a competitive powerlifter which requires me to stay around a specific body weight and I can’t always include a lot of traditional desserts in my diet during season. I developed these options as a way to help satisfy my sweet tooth without taking up too many calories. Everyone should always be able to have treats of some sort in their life! Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like a decadent cookie straight from the oven, and my calorie-conscious treats are a close second.
I officially got my business up and running at the beginning of 2021, so still growing and learning along the way. One thing I tried to remind myself from the start was to just dive in and start doing things rather than waiting until everything felt perfect – because it will never be perfect. Waiting too long is just wasting time you could be using to experiment or reach new customers. Sometimes good enough is a good starting point to grow from.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With good weather, there is so much to do! My friends and I are pretty active, so most of our stops will include lots of walking. You can never go wrong with a stroll around the Botanical Gardens, always lots to see and makes for great conversation along the way. No trip to ATL is complete without a hike around and up Stone Mountain and a picnic at Piedmont Park!
Of course after long walks we’d need a treat, so stopping at some of the iconic donut places around the city – Shaq’s Krispy Kreme, Sublime and Five Daughters at Ponce City Market. Where we could then walk off our donut coma along the Beltline.
For lunch/dinner, you can always have a great meal at Chops lobster Bar, the Atlanta Fish Market, and Fat Matt’s Rib Shack.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have started this business without the encouragement and support from my husband David Spitdowski (Spitz Fitness). It was actually his idea that I take my creativity and talent for baking and dive into to becoming a small business. He’s been my #1 fan (and honest taste tester) for the past 9 years.
