We had the good fortune of connecting with Naisha Tyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Naisha, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for House Of Stuyvesant came about because I wanted to see a business exist that housed all of the chic and neutral things that I love: home décor, jewelry, body care products, and handcrafted décor and art. My vision was to create a place that was affordable and that showcased items the everyday person could see and use in their home.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
House Of Stuyvesant pays homage to my Brooklyn roots. Growing up and walking through the streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant, I’d often find myself peeking into the windows of the brownstones on the block. A lot of the homes were minimally decorated yet chic, and the images and style stuck with me. That inspiration fuels my ideas for House of Stuyvesant.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I am not looking to be like any other home decor brand. House of Stuyvesant is a lifestyle brand with a heavy emphasis on home decor. I’m focused on helping people create homes and spaces that are minimalist, peaceful, and stylish. I introduced jewelry to the online shop recently, despite being unsure whether potential customers would understand how it fit with the brand, but it has been very well received! Taking that risk is something that I’m proud of.
None of this is easy, but it’s so worth it. Cliche but true. The challenges of self-sabotage and imposter syndrome are things that I struggle with, but am learning to push through and trust my instincts and talent.
One big lesson I’ve learned is, “stay ready so you don’t have to get ready”… another well-known phrase, but it’s nothing but the truth and applies in every area of business and, to be honest, in life.
The world will soon discover that the House Of Stuyvesant brand is the go-to for chic neutrals, calming tones, textures with pops of gold, silver, and brass. I’ve designed House of Stuyvesant to feature all of these, along with decor, accessories, jewelry, and handcrafted items that I love.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my daughter, Lauren. She encourages me to keep going. With a previous business I started, I would sit and make items to sell, and she would always come to the table where I worked and give the items a yay or nay. LOL. When I got it right, she would let me know, and I’d like to think that she chose her own path, as a hairstylist, due to the fact that my example encouraged her to follow her dreams and use the gifts that God has given her.
