We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
You can’t do everything all the time, which took me a long time to figure out. Actually, I still struggle with that. Work Life balance isn’t set in stone. Give yourself grace and allow the balance to give and take on either end as you need to. Some days the dishes will be done and the kids get to go to the park but no client work gets done. Some days my kids are on their tablets all day and we order takeout. Taking time off to reset your brain is super important. Being a creative, the worst feeling is being burnt out and like you aren’t offering your clients your very best. Schedule time within your calendar to have breaks, and if you need to log off an hour early one day, then come back the next day with fresh eyes. Try to find a routine that works for you and your family. This may take some time to find and it may change as your phase of life changes but even a simple morning routine can help you feel more in control.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Entrepreneurship as a creative mind is intense. Most of us are pretty critical of our craft to begin with so that imposter syndrome is no joke once you are creating for more than just hobby. One of my biggest accomplishments has been learning how to push past that and create amazing work for my clients. It still sneaks in every once in a while but I just go back to the strategy and the client profile and we make the very best design for their business. You have to trust your gut, your intuition and sometimes, take some big risks to get to that next step in your business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m Atlanta born + raised and I still haven’t found all of the gems of this amazing city. We are definitely going to the Varsity. I know a lot of people think it’s gross but it’s an Atlanta icon and it’s delicious. We can hit up Arabia Mountain for a fun, yet easy hike because I like being in nature but I am not trying to sweat too much. We will most certainly go to La Fonda’s for a huge bowl of queso and some bomb margaritas, then try to catch a show at Variety Playhouse or Center Stage or The Tabernacle. Go get some buffalo oyster bites from Six Feet Under and then a golden hour stroll through Oakland Cemetery. Get amazing tacos from our secret spot on Buford Hwy then go to a movie at the Starlight Drive-In. Go visit the ducks at The Duck Pond, go on the sketchiest rides at Six Flags. Lots of yummy food, good company, cold drinks, long naps.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fiancé, Nick, and my kids. They all drive me crazy but I think it’s because I love them all so much. I work this business for them just as much as I work it for myself. Nick pushes me to do more, to go out of the box, to hustle hard and will always lend an ear or an eye when I need feedback. My kids have gone through an entire year of a pandemic with grace and (mostly) positive attitudes. They have been patient with me when I needed to work and given me huge hugs when I needed them, too. My family is pretty fu#@king awesome.
