Meet Robert McCray: Real Estate Investor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert McCray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When deciding to start the business, there were many things that were going through my head. I knew that I ultimately wanted to be a creator and real estate is the avenue I chose. At the time, I was working for a regional developer and I thought to myself, “Why not recreate their business model but do it for myself?” and that is what led to the formation of Vantage Realty Capital. Many people look at real estate as an extremely lucrative industry, which it can be, but there is more to it than the money. Here at VRC, we primarily focus in residential and multifamily real estate which allow us to provide quality living to families and individuals. In addition to providing housing, I wanted to start a business that I would be able to hand down to the next generation in my family. As many people know, real estate is one way to create generational wealth and I told myself, why not start now.

What should our readers know about your business?
Here at Vantage Realty Capital, we focus on residential and multifamily acquisitions. Something that sets us apart from others is the fact that we undertake projects with the mindset of, the community coming first. For deals that we are looking to acquire, we find time to speak to residents in the neighborhood and get an accurate perspective of what they like and don’t like or aspects of the community that can be improved. This allows us to focus on improving the overall livability of a property or neighborhood by simply taking the time to listen to the people we serve. Additionally, we are actively working to combat the affordable housing crisis by purchasing affordable properties and keeping them as such. Unfortunately, the real estate industry is not going to build its way out of this crisis as construction costs such as materials and labor have steadily been on the rise. VRC is actively looking to acquire communities and impose affordability restrictions; therefore, working towards the preservation of existing affordable housing. To do so, we have entertained the idea of utilizing Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and partnering with non-profit organizations to host events that foster an inclusive environment.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh man, there are plenty of people that deserve a shoutout for helping me get to where I am today. First, I’d like to shoutout my mother. She has been supportive of my vision every step of the way which I am forever grateful for. Additionally, I would like to shoutout Leslie Ludwig, Co-Founder of L&L Advisors. Leslie has gone above and beyond to make sure I am the best version of myself as I have navigated the industry over the past few years. Lastly, I would like to shoutout Ali Semir, Co-Founder of James River Housing Partners. Ali has made himself readily available any time I need help or have a question regarding any aspect of a real estate transaction.
