Meet Megan Blaising: Author & Adjunct Professor of Sociology

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Blaising and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what principle do you value most?
Integrity. Having personal moral integrity encourages true authenticity; thus, allowing the manifestation of some of our greatest work as when it’s real, it resonates. Moreover, being morally undivided and unified permits peace – and sadly – peace today seems seldom. Knowing yourself that intimately allows a certain freedom that I argue most do not have the privilege of experiencing. Being able to trust yourself to that magnitude in a world that conditions us to second guess our every decision, and preference is liberating. I believe integrity is at the crux of sustainable success. Those individuals who practice true integrity are the leaders we desperately need. Nelson Mandela eloquently said, “You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself. Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Indiana University -Indianapolis and a Master’s in Applied Sociology. Currently, I am working on my doctorate in Education at Marian University. My professional background lies in urban education -namely education reform. I have dedicated my life to fostering visibility to disenfranchised and neglected communities and advocating for quality education opportunities for all. I have served in various charter and alternative education institutions. I have served as a school counselor, social worker, legal advocate, leader and educational consultant. Currently, I am an adjunct Professor of Sociology at the University of Indianapolis. Lastly, I am now a best-selling author. I always knew that I wanted to serve others in an intentional capacity – what that ultimately looked like I was uncertain. I believe my personal educational experience (attending both public and private institutions) ignited my interest in the education field. Specifically, analyzing the discrepancies within our current system and ultimately motivating me to pursue supporting and leadership roles in education reform. I think that biggest lesson that I have learned over the years is the importance of self care. I know that in order to take care of others, you have to also take care of yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
During the summer months, there are a lot of fun events held downtown. I would try to attend one of those. One of my favorites such as the Strawberry Festival, Jazz Festival or the Italian Festival. If I were to pick a place for us to hang out, eat and grab drinks, I would choose somewhere near Mass. Ave. More than likely, another one of my favorite places, Salt – great seafood and wine!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I appreciate Voyage ATL for this opportunity!
