Meet Janelle King: Nurse, Blogger & Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I started blogging and writing, I really had to keep a tight schedule so that I could fulfill all of my personal and professional responsibilities. Since my daughter is a little older and a little more independent, I have the opportunity to take on more writing clients. I’m also very fortunate to have a husband who supports all of my endeavors and takes on more of the home duties when he knows I have big project deadlines looming. My balance is fluid. There are weeks where I can spend more time honing my craft and other weeks in my career as a nurse or my commitments as a wife or mother takes precedent. In the beginning, I would often overextend myself trying to maintain this balance, but I now recognize that I just have to be flexible and to adjust to my shifting priorities.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a blogger and freelance writer but what really sets me apart is that I’m a registered nurse. I use my knowledge and experience to educate women about their bodies! I’ve found that there is a lot of misinformation about sexual and reproductive health, so I started a blog to provide accurate content about the subjects that are often still considered taboo. I also write for several different online publications providing similar content. My journey was definitely not easy and I didn’t have a manual to show me how to translate my clinical knowledge into readable and relatable content. But I am fortunate to have cultivated relationships with individuals who have offered me support and insight to make my journey a little bit easier. My brand helps to simplify vaginas, periods, and sex! On my blog and social media platforms, I provide accurate reproductive and sexual health content to women who may be uncomfortable discussing these topics. My approach is to provide much-needed content in a manner that is easy to understand.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I’ve only been in Atlanta for just over two years and I’m still trying to figure out the city myself (lol). But what I love about my new home town is that there are so many diverse neighborhoods with rich and interesting histories. If my girls were in town, I would have to take them to Ponce City Market. I just love the eclectic vibe. We would also spend some time along the Beltline, dine at Café Sunflower, or and spend a day pampering ourselves at Iwi Fresh Garden Day Spa.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been so many individuals who have poured into me during this journey. Whether it was answering my questions, providing feedback, or even allowing me to pick their brain, these individuals have been instrumental in my growth. Firstly, my husband Gary King for always having my back and believing in my dream and abilities. Odera Agbim and Feyi Alufohai are two beautiful and creative women I met when I first moved to Atlanta. Cara Sevier, Victoria Randle, and Kelsey Rowell are a few of the nurses that I have met along the way who showed me that I could create my own path as a nurse and creative.
