We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Blue and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pick a creative career simply because it was the only career that made sense for me. I always got asked the same cliche question of, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As I grew older, I didn’t have a clue. I always did photography on the side, but I never imagined it to take off the way it has now. I have always been so hesitant on fully engaging in a creative career until now. I think that photography chose me, I didn’t choose it. This career has helped me make so many connections and help me express myself and how I look at things freely. I think the best part of pursuing a creative career is that it I’m doing what I love. The money is a plus. It never feels like a job I HAVE to do, but something I WANT to do all of the time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a commercial and sports photographer. I think what is interesting about my art is I like to photograph action/movement with intriguing angles. I feel that my commercial work and sports work coincides with each other. It creates the illusion of you actually being there, but yet makes you wonder “how was that shot created?” I try to create things that are different, and not the normal portraiture look. I really love blending those two styles together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Huntsville is a vast growing area, it is said it will be the next Atlanta years to come. I would take them walk around the beautiful outdoor mall of Bridge Street Town Centre to shop and eat, then we would go downtown and explore the beautiful architecture. Also, I would take us to Lowe Mills and look at the amazing art that’s displayed all throughout the building. Lastly, we would go to the Escape Room and then go back to Bridgestreet to eat dinner. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my best friend, Yosmen Foster. She is the one that pushed me to pursue photography. My sophomore year of college, she asked me to take her sister’s prom pictures. At the time, I had given up on photography, but she encouraged me to pursue photography. Since then, I have been employed by 6 different companies, and currently running my own business for 4 years now with plenty of features and recognitions. Outside of pushing me to pursue my dream, she has been there to assist me on shoots, invested in my craft and has been that mental support for me as well. I also want to give credit to my professors at The University of Alabama and my many mentors that have taught me specific techniques on how to shoot, edit, and to find my creative style of photography. Last, but not least, I want to thank my mom for never giving up on me and always investing in my dream. She even bought my very first camera.
