We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Berger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I knew I’d be involved in the arts before I decided to pursue acting. I naturally felt pulled to everything creative and artistic because of my musical family. My mom preached to my siblings and me that the arts were fulfilling and crucial to society. My strong suits in school pointed towards subjects that required creativity as well. So I continued to spend all my free time in dance classes or in musicals. Packing up what I knew to be home, I moved to Atlanta to pursue acting in a new market, and that marked my biggest leap of faith. More than anything I wanted to be auditioning for real jobs and proving myself in the industry. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I had more drive than I knew what to do with. More recently, I’ve asked myself why I am pursuing Film/TV and Theatre more often than I ever imagined. One thing I learned through 2020 is that without acting, singing, and dancing as a vital part of my life, I feel claustrophobic. Without the arts. Without storytelling. My decision to be an actor rings truer in my heart. Why did I pursue acting? Do I belong here? Is there a place for me in the industry? Those questions are recurring, and maybe it is mostly imposter syndrome. The demands, competitiveness, daily grind, luck, and expectations of the career cannot be the answer. I pursue storytelling through acting on stage or screen because it’s what I am meant to do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My training has given me a wide range of flexibility, foundation, and individuality as an actor. The technique strengthened me to respond truthfully in imaginary circumstances. The challenges taught me about myself and broadened my ability to empathize with the human experience. I want to be known as an actor and performer who brings an honest, and fresh interpretation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in Atlanta for less than 2 years (and one of those years being 2020) puts me at a disadvantage for this one. So far I love Heirloom Market BBQ, Hodgepodge coffee, Rev coffee, the rooftop of Ponce, and hidden spots along the Chattahoochee river.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to my mom. Without her interest, critique, and support, I would not be a musician or actor. Love you Mom, more than words.
