We had the good fortune of connecting with Ethan Campbell-Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ethan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to be able to enjoy the work I do. Ever since high school I had to learn that my work would not necessarily be fun to do but when I had fun in activities I loved it was able to get my passion. I thought to myself about what I could do as a profession while being able to be in love with the process at the same time. During that time I developed my love for social media content creation but living in Jamaica where at that time was not a very well supported idea of a hobby, much more a profession. After doing research and success stories from entrepreneurs who were able to do it in other counties, I figured why not do it as a Jamaican? I wanted to be one of the best content creators I could be representing my country and above all, being able to pay my bills, make a life and enjoy the process of my business. Of course being your own boss is a flex.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The theme that governs the videos I make is comedy, but more specifically exaggerated realism from the world I know. My style of comedy has been influenced by my Jamaican culture, by our music and simply our lifestyle. Many say that comedy is a universal language but from my experience, I see how much a country and its culture can have its own humor. For Jamaicans music is a big part of our culture and as a result our comedy comes to life with lyricism and poetry. These elements I put heavy emphasis on when I create videos. To get where I am today was probably the most difficult thing I had to do in my life, and I feel as if I still am nowhere near where I want to be. I had to sacrifice relationships with people that did not support my passion for creativity. The sacrifice of those relationships, respect of many peers and even some hopes and dreams of some family members had to be discarded to forge my own path in life. To say it was easy would be a massive understatement and arriving at the realization that I have to live my life for myself and no one else was what drove me to overcome. The lessons I have learned building my brand: Live for myself, I cannot live for another, if you truly want something in life you can find a way to achieve it, and my culture is so much more than what mainstream media allows it to be. My brand reflects who I am, a fighting dreamer from a third world country who will not abandon the customs ingrained in me. In the USA today they say that representation matters, so I want to represent my culture in ways we have yet to see in the realm on content creation.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My idea of fun and recreation comes from a very caribbean identity and Atlanta surely has that flavour of the Caribbean. Of course we are still in the midst of a pandemic but Atlanta’s Caribbean social scene was what made me feel as if I had a home away from home. A weekend is more than enough to eat drink and socialise in Atlanta! Friday: Bliss Lounge on 5471 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain. A great Caribbean club/lounge/bar with the perfect blend of Caribbean music choices. Saturday: Saturday night is determined by what’s happening in the city that time of year. I recommend a live event from whatever Caribbean artist is in town. But let’s say you are in Atlanta during the month of May, make SURE that Saturday is reserved for Atlanta’s Caribbean Carnival! Sunday: Rum Punch Brunch on 483 Edgewood Ave SE. Atl. Great food, strong rum punch and by far my favourite thing to do on a Sunday Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank the friends who believed in me being able to launch my own brand. I would like to thank the people who have subscribed to my channel. Specifically I would like to thank my management, EFFIT, for helping me become a better content creator. Thanks also goes to the mentorship and collaboration from other other great content creators such as Dutty Berry, Mad White Jamaican, ChineyKpopgirl, GyalisInParis, PrinceMarni. I thank the High Order Team for being a great group of genuine friends bonded together by a passion to create content. Lastly I thank my Jamaican parents that support their son doing a very non traditional job.
