We had the good fortune of connecting with Rain Chapman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rain, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The Unicorn Effect came about as a rebrand of myself, I just had a baby girl – I had gone through my own ups and downs in personal life and with other businesses that I did carry. So I hadn’t done anything for a while (no cooking, no events, nothing. And she has such a magical personality – i call her my little unicorn. And when you think of unicorns you think of love, magic, and happiness. All of the things I wish to bring to the clients I come in contact with. I wanted people to feel happiness from the love they were getting in the food they receive, or even now in our skincare products, feeling happiness and magic from a pure place.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Unicorn Effect is a brand that embodies self care in a different form. You would never think of it, but treating yourself to a good meal, or service is a form of self care, and that’s exactly what we offer. From the biweekly specialty menu for Blackbox Sundays, the array of treats and entrees on our catering menus, to our theme dinner parties and our now self care line. Two of my business slogans that I live by and set the tone of what to expect from me and what separates me from others is, ” When You Think Of Unicorns, You Think of Love & Happiness,” and the other “There Is No Limit To The Magic You Can Create.” I tell clients all the time, whatever challenge you may think I cannot do, please throw it my way anyways and allow me the oppurtunity to show you what magic I can create, and end up creating it and it be a beautiful thing. I wasn’t always Rain Chapman, The Black Unicorn nor did I always have The Unicorn Effect. I was just Rain this party promoter from almost ten years ago turned chef, self care enthusiast, woman empowering entrepreneur….over time My journey just like any others, has not been an easy journey, but I’ve been blessed enough to be surrounded by people who love and support me genuinely – so it makes the journey all the more worth while. I have faced many trails within the last ten years, from going to jail and having to rebrand myself completely, to losing a business a few years later and having to rebrand myself again, from getting into it with friends who also did business but allowed the friendship and the business relationship deter because people take kindness for weakness… and what did i do through all of that. I picked my head up and kept on pushing. Right now I know that Im not where I want to be, i feel that i should be a lot further ahead in my journey, but the way God is set up – theres a time and place for everything. I’m in the right place, its just not my time yet.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a true homebody, I would much rather be home then in the streets, and you can come over Ill cook for you, we laugh, talk, watch movies whatever. But people that also know me know that when I do go out I like to have a good time. One of my best friend from high school plans to come into town soon , and I’ve already started my 2021 HAVE TO DO list – some places I’ve been some I have not and they are as follow: Andretti Racing in Marietta, High Museum of Art & The Children’s Museum of Atlanta Culture Experience Art Gallery/Museum Gun Range, preferably in Henry County Iron Age Korean BBQ in Duluth, Originally considered camping/cabin trip in Blue Ridge Mtns, then i thought Spa Weekend instead at cheatu elan in Braselton, Centennial Park & Atlanta Botanical Gardens Kodaks Kitchen off Edgewood for some good hole in the wall eats, LIPS in Atlanta for a good drag show, and last but never least… a Homecooked Jamaican Dinner at my parents house, well backyard because my parents are still not letting people inside The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I do want to give credit first to both my parents, my mom for teaching me business logistics, giving me a hand in her own business so that I learn and grow and spread that same knowledge and for also teaching me to be a strong black woman in a world dominated by men, my dad for supporting any path I took no matter what it was – he stood by my side every step of the way. My friends have been a very big support system through every trail and tribulation, they say that i inspire them which warms my heart but its their own life journeys and love that drive me. They are more than just friends if we are really being honest, they are family And lastly my baby unicorn – shes the reason alot of this has happened, she continues to play a big role and plays her own role in the business and it just makes me proud how engaged a four year old is in big womens business.
