We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Newsome and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting Crowns On Wellness was that I wanted to be the holistic health and wellness resource that represented my community. There was no one that looked like me sharing the type of natural wellness modalities I used and needed to begin my wellness journey. So I wanted to be that resource for my community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I call Crowns On Wellness ~ The Bridge! We’re an Afro-centric holistic health and wellness company that works to help bridge the gap of understanding of how ancient, natural healing modalities can improve and/or reverse health issues. I teach people how to take control of their health by implementing the four pillars of Crowns On Wellness: Plant-Based Nutrition, Body Movement, Natural Herbal Remedies and Spiritual Wellness Guidance. I truly believe It’s IMPORTANT to be an active participant in every stage of your wellness plans and endeavors if you want to shift things for the better. What sets us apart from others is the intention and impact my company has had within the community. From teaching children yoga to coaching adults into better states of health has been nothing short of amazing. I still squirm a little when people share their kind sentiments of how our interaction has changed their life for the better. When I started, I have to honestly saythatI jumped into my business. I was too excited to share the information I was learning about natural healing modalities that I didn’t quite understand business growth and development, I just knew I wanted to help people. However, I’m super grateful for friends and services that helped me structure my business correctly and learn more about business overall. Some stuff I learned through trial and error, but that’s normal. Starting a business doesn’t have to be hard or challenging, but I would have to say be clear on the solution you intend to provide and definitely seek for assistance to get everything set up properly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well my best friends are from where I’m from (Detroit, MI) so they already know what’s up…lol. We honestly love just being in each other’s company and I love cooking so the fun would definitely start at my house then trekking somewhere in downtown Detroit and downtown Ferndale would be ideal. We’re all for the most part home bodies, but we love taking trips to places we’ve never been. Hopefully our next trip is to Bora Bora or Brazil! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow, so there is truly a VILLAGE that has assisted me to this point in my life and business. My husband Rodger and my sun Russell has been the main support and driving force behind me pursing the path of community service. My husband always says, “if someone hears you talk about health and wellness they are forever changed by your words. They can see and hear the passion you have for what you teach. I don’t support just because you’re my wife, I do it because I see, hear and feel your passion for what you do”. It’s so amazing to have someone who talks to you like that daily. My sun is my living, breathing testimony that natural healing modalities REALLY work. To be told I can’t have children at 20 something to having a baby NATURALLY is legit proof that you can go the natural way. I would also like to highlight some distant mentors. Although a significant amount of my holistic health and wellness education came from self studies the gurus I gleaned a lot of information from were people like Dr. Sebi, Dr. Llaila Afrika, Queen Afua, Dr. Keefa Lorraine Weatherspoon and many others. Having access to information of ancient practices of wellness from people who looked like me added to the desire, passion and mentality to pay it forward.
