We had the good fortune of connecting with Britnee Alphin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britnee, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I decided to be a serial entrepreneur I was focused on creating brands that could be of service to people. Whether that service was to assist with a need, provide information to better oneself or just show support to a community, I am here for it all. I’ve always been the “see an issue and fix it” person even as a kid and it just took greater root as I got older. Starting a business or brand is never about the money for me it’s almost always about either obedience to God or seeing lack of representation in an area of passion.

What should our readers know about your business?
I do many things but Mahogony Magazine is the business and brand we will highlight today! Mahogony Magazine is a print magazine celebrating Black women changing the narrative of perfection, unapologetically. We exist to remind Black women of how dope they are by highlighting everyday Black women not models who are deemed perfect but everyday Black Moms, sisters, friends, essential workers, bloggers, foodies and everything in between. It hits different when you can flip through a magazine and identify with someone who looks like you with or without your face beat and edges laid. I want my daughter and every little Black girl to be able to love who they are without enhancements, unrealistic expectations of their bodies based on pop culture standards and without having to feel insignificant because they can’t identify with the botoxed women they see in the media. As a Mom who doesn’t look like Tyra Banks or Cardi B, I wanted to create a platform for Black women to see themselves as worthy even with their bonnet on. Starting a print magazine during a pandemic was IGNORANT but it was the most fulfilling feeling to see my business reach people even during a global viral and racial pandemic! Starting a business is never easy no matter if everything is in your favor or not but the key to success is believing that you can and researching ways to make the impossible possible! My story isn’t perfect. I started my brand living in a one bedroom room with one bathroom with my two children and husband. We have minimal space for our food and limited living space in general. I didn’t have a ton of money in the bank either. My husband actually let me use our savings to invest in my business. I say all that to say that even in imperfect circumstances, I still made it work! I still believed that God set me aside for a reason. I still moved in obedience and faith no matter what it looked like. You have to believe your worthy and can do all things through God and I promise you that will get your through even your darkest, penniless hour!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh it’s a week party! Considering my kids are my only best friends outside of my husband, my “fun bone” is limited BUT I love me some food and we can always find good food in Atlanta! First stop is Green Love Kitchen. I love supporting Black owned businesses that treat you well. This small business is amazing! The food is always amazing and literally made with love! Next stop Ponce City Market! I love window shopping and I love the city life plus there are a ton of photo worthy spots to remember the visit and access to the Beltline which is stop #3. Night cap time! I love Mexican food. Depending on my mood we would either get drinks and grub from La Fondas or Red Pepper Taqueria in Decatur. The drinks and food there is absolutely amazing! Then for desert my fave spot is Cinnaholic in Little Five Points! I love vegan food (obviously) and they have the absolute best treats! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So cliche but I have to give a huge shoutout to my husband! We have been partners in crime for over 15 years and life partners for 10 years. He is the reason why I am a serial entrepreneur because no matter what it is that I’ve wanted to do, he’s stood by my side and encouraged me, footed the bill, taught me different ways to be a better business woman and never gave up on me even when I gave up on myself! He has ALWAYS been my biggest fan and the best support partner and business partner I have ever had. Between him and God (and every customer and my digital support circle) I don’t know where I’d be!
