We had the good fortune of connecting with Magdalena Bach and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Magdalena, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I am an architect—this is both my profession and my passion. I am drawn to the idea of creating the stage for everyday life: spaces that support people, make daily routines easier, and bring a sense of harmony and beauty to how they live.
Architecture is a deeply complex discipline. Beyond creativity, it demands technical knowledge, problem-solving, and close collaboration with others. Each project is shaped by real constraints—site conditions, program, budget, and technology—and the final outcome is always the result of working within multidisciplinary teams.
I find this complexity both challenging and deeply rewarding, and it is precisely what makes a creative career in architecture so compelling to me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My professional roots are deeply grounded in Scandinavian architecture and aesthetics. I approach architecture as a creative form of problem-solving—one that begins with listening closely to my clients and understanding the specific conditions of each site. The relationship between interior spaces and the surrounding nature, as well as the role of natural light, is central to my work and shapes every project I design.

I lived and worked in Denmark for 15 years, where I was immersed in a culture that values simplicity, functionality, and thoughtful design. When I moved to the United States, I had to start my career from scratch. Beyond the obvious shift from millimeters and centimeters to inches and feet, I encountered entirely different building techniques, materials, regulations, and architectural traditions. It was challenging, at times humbling—but I had a strong desire to create and to continue working in the field I love.

In 2009, I founded Bach Design Studio. From the beginning, I focused on residential projects, consistently promoting modern architecture and a design language rooted in clarity, harmony, and purpose. Over time, this approach resonated with clients. In 2017, one of my projects—a mountain residence—received a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects, Georgia chapter. This recognition meant a great deal to me. It confirmed the importance of trusting my instincts and showed me that people truly value what I create for them.

Today, I’m grateful to work with inspiring clients on a wide range of meaningful projects. I genuinely enjoy the collaborative process—working together to turn ideas into homes and places people dream of living in. My brand is about creating unique, thoughtful architecture tailored to my clients’ wishes and budgets. I believe in harmony, elegance, and functionality, and in a close partnership between client and architect to achieve a beautifully executed result.

What sets Bach Design Studio apart is this blend of Scandinavian sensibility with a deep understanding of the American context—architecture that is calm, intentional, and refined, yet practical and grounded. If there is one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that the path is rarely easy, but persistence, curiosity, and staying true to your values can take you exactly where you are meant to be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta for a week, I’d plan a mix of great food, culture, music, and time outdoors. We’d start with a walk along the BeltLine, coffee at Brash, and some time at Ponce City Market. For dinner, I’d take them to The Optimist for seafood or Cooks & Soldiers for tapas.
We’d spend a day at the High Museum and explore neighborhoods like Inman Park and Druid Hills, with lunch at Delbar. Evenings would be about good food and live music—maybe Talat Market or BoccaLupo, followed by blues at Blind Willie’s.
We’d also slow down and enjoy nature—the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the trails along the Chattahoochee River, and definitely my town, Roswell. I love its cozy downtown, small shops, good restaurants and relaxed atmosphere near the river. We’d have dinner at Tipsy Thaiger there—it’s one of my favorite local spots and always a fun, vibrant experience.
What makes Atlanta special to me is its creative energy and cultural diversity.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As a young architect, I worked in several architectural studios in Copenhagen. My shoutout goes to the people from there who trusted me with real responsibility and gave me the freedom to explore ideas creatively. I’m deeply grateful for the collaborative spirit of those teams—for the intense, sometimes heated discussions that pushed projects forward and made work fun. Those conversations always led to better solutions, and they strengthened the friendships that remain to this day.
