We had the good fortune of connecting with Maureen Doss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maureen, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my business was born out of one of the hardest seasons of my life. When my daughter was just 11 years old, she was diagnosed with brain cancer and went through two years of chemotherapy. In the middle of navigating her treatments, doctor’s appointments, and the emotional weight of that journey, I realized I needed work that gave me the flexibility to be present for her and our family.

I started my business from home so I could build income while also being fully available for my family. What began as a way to survive a very personal challenge has now grown into a company built on systems, support, and strategy-helping other entrepreneurs design businesses that serve their lives, instead of the other way around.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is built around one core mission: helping entrepreneurs design businesses that live for them – not the other way around. Through my company, the Virtual Workhorse Team, and our signature platform, the Workhorse Hub, we give business owners the strategy, systems, and support they need to step out of the weeds and into the life they envision. What sets us apart is that we don’t just provide strategy, we provide life-changing opportunities to implement our systems for change-we bring operations strategy, automation, and proactive support that truly frees people to focus on what matters most, whether that’s scaling their business or being present with their families.

I am most proud of the fact that what started as a survival decision during my daughter’s cancer journey has become a thriving business helping other women reclaim their time, sanity, and confidence. Getting here was anything but easy—there were moments of uncertainty, clients who weren’t the right fit, and plenty of trial and error. But every challenge taught me something: how to trust my instincts, how to build sustainable offers instead of chasing “busy work,” and how to stay grounded in my “why.”

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that success doesn’t come from doing everything yourself. It comes from designing the right systems, asking for help, and staying anchored to the bigger vision. What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that this isn’t just about business growth-it’s about creating freedom and presence. I believe no one should have to choose between building a successful business and living a full life, and everything we do is built to make that possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit, I’d want to give them a mix of the cozy local vibe and the beauty of the outdoors. We’d start the week with a coffee at The Daily Grind, one of my favorite spots to relax and chat, and then stroll around the Marietta Square to check out the local shops, unique boutiques, and maybe even catch some live music if it’s happening in the square that evening.

During the week, I’d plan a hike at Red Top Mountain or along the shores of Lake Allatoona-there’s nothing like fresh air and scenic views to recharge. We’d sprinkle in some meals at local gems, enjoying Southern comfort food and family-owned restaurants that make you feel at home. One afternoon, we’d head out to Qualusi Vineyards for a glass of wine and a laid-back evening surrounded by beautiful scenery.

By the end of the week, they’d get the full taste of what I love most about living here: the warmth of small businesses, the sense of community, and the balance of peaceful nature with vibrant local culture.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to Lynne Dale and Team Summer, a childhood cancer nonprofit that gave my daughter hope and purpose during her treatment. Through their mission, she was able to meet other children with cancer and experience the joy of giving, even in the midst of her own battle. That experience not only created lasting friendships for our family, but it also opened a door for me personally. Lynne was the first to give me a freelancing opportunity in the nonprofit world, which helped me realize my potential and my love for running things behind the scenes for others. That gift of support and belief in me planted the seeds for the business I run today.
