Meet Danay | Salon Owner/Cosmetologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Danay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my salon was deeply rooted in a desire to create more than just a space for beauty, it was about building a sanctuary where people feel seen, heard, and confidently transformed. As a hairstylist, I’ve always been passionate about helping others express their identity through their hair. Over time, I realized I wanted full creative freedom to shape the entire experience, from the energy of the environment to the standard of care clients receive.
I wanted to design a salon that reflects excellence, authenticity, and community. A place where clients don’t just come for a service, but for an experience, where each appointment is about empowerment, education, and elevation. My thought process was simple: if I could blend my love for artistry with my vision for a warm, welcoming, and professional space, I could offer something truly special. That vision became the foundation of my salon.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My journey hasn’t been easy.
I was born in the mid-80s, and like many, I faced my share of hardships. In my 20s, I found myself in and out of jail, going through trials and tribulations that could’ve easily derailed my dreams. But deep down, I knew I wanted more for myself.
Cosmetology school was a turning point-but it came with its own challenges. It’s expensive, time consuming, and demands full dedication.
On top of that, I was on house arrest. I had to balance a full-time job, school, and strict curfews to avoid setting off my ankle monitor. It was one of the hardest periods of my life, but I was determined to push through.
Starting my own salon felt like a far-off dream at one point. It was a huge step that came with risks, sacrifices, and moments of struggle.
Keeping a business going, especially in the beginning, it takes grit, faith, and resilience. But every lesson along the way shaped me.
Now at 40, with 14 years in business under my belt, I can proudly say l’m an expert in my craft and in entrepreneurship. My journey is a testament to growth, perseverance, and never giving up on yourself, no matter how the story starts.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend to City Winery to catch a nice vibe with some good food, drinks and live music. I would also take them to Bahama Breeze in Duluth during happy hour. Great drinks and half price appetizers. Atlantic Station for shopping and enjoying the weather.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents for always believing in me, Miss Gyslaine for mentoring me at just 16 years old about salon theory, and Empire Beauty School and Smart Styles located in Walmart for helping me get experience when I first started my business
