We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Alexandra Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been interested in the arts. I grew up going to museums, art was always my chosen elective in school and I danced for 14 years. The idea of taking a creative career path was brought on by a revelation I had during my sophomore year of high school when I realized working in film was a real job and path I could take. I had always loved movies but it wasn’t until I realized I too could help create these fictional worlds that my passion was ignited in a new way. The following year I enrolled in an Audio Visual class, an intro to film where I learned the basics of camera, lighting and editing. Shortly after the pandemic began in 2020 and film was near impossible to interact with I ventured into my love for design with my free time and started my own independent non-profit magazine, Never Mind Magazine. Which now has 5 print issues published where I feature artists of all mediums from all over the world in print and digital spaces with the help of my partnership with Universal Music. It was through my magazine I found my love for graphic design and what a versatile medium it is, the idea that design can be anything from branding to motion graphics. I felt as if I had finally found a medium broad enough for my interests. I graduated high school 6 months early and enrolled in Art School at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta where I majored in Graphic Design with a double minor in Film/TV and Art History. This May, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my Bachelor in Fine Arts. During my time at SCAD I was involved in over 15 films, and found some incredible friends along the way that also act as my creative partners. It was in college that I discovered my dream job of doing Graphic Design for Film, combining my love for both mediums. Design for film is what helps bring an environment to life whether that’s period accurate signage or a fictional book a character is reading. I am actively pursuing this job, as the Graphic Designer on the feature film “SUPERVOID”. All in all I followed my dreams of pursuing a creative career with the help of my education from SCAD and the never ending support from my parents.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’d say I’m most excited about what the future holds! Having recently graduated from SCAD,I have multiple exciting projects in the works. I’m currently working on issue 6 of my magazine (@never.mind.magazine). I’m co-writing a short film right now and can’t wait to get into pre-production. There’s multiple film projects I’ve been involved in graphic/production design that are set to premiere in the fall. I’m so proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish. I can’t wait to make more projects with friends and people I admire so much.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have the opportunity to show friends around Atlanta I always take them to the Plaza Theatre. You can’t beat the environment of seeing a film in Atlanta’s oldest operating independent cinema from 1939. Next I’d bring them to Videodrome, the best video store in the area, they always have the best obscure and indie films you can’t find on streaming. Next I’d go to my favorite museum, the Center of Puppetry, which features the iconic work from Jim Henson’s The Muppets. Lastly, Little 5 Points is always a fun time with vintage clothing shops and record stores like Criminal Records.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my parents, Travis and Wendie Walker. They always encouraged me to go after my dreams and share my belief that art can make a tangible difference in the world. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their endless love and support.
