We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Choosing a creative career demands a commitment not only to your work but to yourself. You are the artist, and as your create and learn, you find success in the fullness in the word. It comes from inside of you. That means you have to take care of yourself inside & out! I developed a lot of my creative habits from The Artist’s Way, and I am a firm believer in Morning Pages. Every morning, I journal three pages the second I get the sleep out of my eyes. I also do my best to give myself an hour or two every week to do something fun or new. I’ve done splatter rooms, bouldering, solo picnics. Right now, I’m taking an acting class; I’ve never done it before and am loving it!

One thing I’m learning to do is one lovely, kind thing for myself every day. Taking a walk when I need to clear my head. Taking time to stretch when my body needs it. The little things add up, and telling myself “I love you. You’ve got this.” with my actions toward myself make a big difference.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a writer, from social captions to blog posts to articles to screenplays. I write across the aisle, as my friend Evan put it, trying to speak to both side to expand our understanding of each other. I am really proud of the scripts I’ve produced and the blog content I’ve put out in my different roles, two of my favorite mediums.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was from Keith Maitland. He’s the director of Tower, one of my favorite documentaries that I was lucky enough to see while I attended SCAD. He said you will always have two projects: one that supports your life and one that supports your love. I am very thankful to have had to balance this throughout my career. It hasn’t been easy to find the balance, and it’s really easy to put personal projects aside. At the end of the day, the thing you’re trying to deny yourself is the thing that is reminding you why you keep going.

Beyond my creative career, I am take photos, talk quite a bit, and try new things.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You asked the right person. I become a certified tour guide when my friends are in town.

Snag a treat hell yeah gluten free before stopping for coffee at Stereo. Take a yoga class at Dancing Dogs Yoga, one of the most welcoming and fun yoga studios Grab some Plant Based Pizzeria and do a picnic at Grant Park while you watching the sunset over the skyline. Kick-it at Monday Night Brewing’s Garage, and grab a fun bottle at Hop City for wherever you’re staying. Treat yourself to a brunch at Mediterranea before visiting Grant Park Farmer’s Market, or hop to the other side of Grant Park and do Ria’s Bluebird before visiting Oakland Cemetery. Grab a cup of coffee and a vinyl from Portrait Coffee. Wander in Westview Cemetery before hopping on your bike and riding on the Beltline. Walk amongst the trees at Dunwoody Nature Center, one of the city’s best old growth forests. Pick at least one sport to watch live: Braves, United, or Dream. Visit Virginia Highland Books with your PERC from next door and ask the staff for a recommendation. Don’t forget dinner at Truva with drinks at Dad’s after.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be the person I am today without Rummel Andres Medina, one of my best friends and closest collaborator. Every script I’ve finished, crazy idea I’ve had, and lowest moment has landed on his desk, and he has always been there to let me externally process in detail, remind me who I am, and work together to find out where this will lead us. I moved back to Atlanta to be closer to him & his incredible wife Katherine, my family who have given me more than I can ever put into words. I am so lucky to have someone fully believe in me no matter how I feel about myself.
