We had the good fortune of connecting with Leonel Alvarado and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leonel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks is one of the most necessary decisions in any journey. Learning how to manuevuer in challenging situations is a key factor in finding the right path for yourself. I took a huge risk at a very young age right after graduating an early college. I studied and completed classes for Construction Management and started working at a local plumbing business but after a few months I realized it just wasn’t for me. One night I made the crazy decision to pack all my things into my Nissan Altima and move to Miami. No friends, no family, no job, just a risk and a leap of faith. My decision came from the fact that music had been my passion from an early age in my life and I felt in my heart that it was something I really wanted to do so I decided to move to a place where there would be more opportunities. For the first few months I lived out of my car and got a few side jobs taking pictures on an old camera that my mother had bought me and creating designs for people. Little by little I began to learn new things and invest in new equipment. Fast forward to now, I own two businesses which would be RL Studios, a marketing business. I also own Imperium Entertainment, a recording studio. Im also proud to say that I will be soon going in as a partner for a fitness gym with one of my long time clients.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, I love to create music in the moment. Genuine feeling and experiences that give my fans a way to relate to my music with their own experiences. One of my most proudest moments in my musical journey I would say is creating a song called “Poder Latino” and watching it take my career to the next level. Showing me that trusting my gut when it comes to my creative process is definitely something that will pay off. The song grabbed the attention of a big record label and with their help, it became one of the songs I am well known for. With this being one of my proudest moments it was one of my most challenging moments as well as business didn’t workout well with the record label and we went through a heavy legal battle. I was able to take control of my music career again and continue to grow and create music my way. Music has always been a big thing in my life growing up. My father would always play his salsa and tell stories of how him and my uncles would perform on small stages in Honduras. I caught interest in music in my first grade in elementary school with my music teacher Mr Lopez in Brooklyn NY. Growing up and listening to artist such as Daddy yankee, Eminem, Biggie Smalls and Phill Collins I grew to love multiple genres. As my musical career expanded and grew, I began to run into the Need of artwork and videos to promote myself, I learned how to create custom graphics and videos on a professional level through trial and error. Many hours and long nights of trying to perfect my promotional content as an artist molded my decision into creating my company RL Studios. Knowing how much people needed this type of service and how many other companies lacked creativity and that urge to provide top quality work gave me the ultimate motivation to start creating for others. This attracted other artists, djs, promoters, club owners and multiple businesses to book my company for services such as Flyers, Banners, Marketing campaigns, videos, commercials and much more. With custom work and a strong desire to make sure every job come out perfect to the clients requests, I have built a very respected business relationship with each and every one of them. This same mindset I take into (Imperium Entertainment) the recording studio when it comes to creating music for other artists. I went to many studios on my way up and many engineers looked at the money side of the business instead of the creative side, causing work to be rushed and ignored. With this in mind I learned to recorded myself and mastered the art of mixing and mastering, which now I provide to all up and coming and established artists who are looking for an engineer who understands and can create and help in the process of their creativity. Many challenges throughout my journey but one thing is very clear, these situations shape you and help you get to where you need to be. Respect the challenges and struggles and learn how to maneuver through the uncomfortable. That is what brings you closer to success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anytime I have friends and family over visiting from out of town, the first place I always take them to is the Crossfit Gym. They are never excited but they never say no either. I find it funny because a lot of people never really know what Crossfit is about until I take them. The Crossfit workouts are always intense so the next place to visit after a hard workout would be a place me and my wife found when we first moved to Atlanta which is Mamajuana Restaurant & Lounge in Lilburn GA. They have the best authentic Dominican food and they have great drinks, after hours they play music and it’s a great vibe overall. Two other great places to visit in our opinion would be the Atlanta Zoo and the Georgia Aquarium.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people who have made a huge impact on my journey. First I would like to say thank you to my mother who is a stomach cancer survivor and even when going through treatment she made the effort to come support me at my shows and business gatherings. Next I would like to thank two people that I look up to as mentors, Jerris Mcphail (Former NFL Runner Back). Ive known Jerris for several years and he is one of my long time clients who has given me a lot of business advice and has always believed in me. I would also like to thank John White who initially was just one of my clients but we became closer and he told me his story on how he created successful businesses from being a risk taker as well. And last but not least I would like to thank my wife who from the very beginning has always shown me support and love. Throughout the years she has stood tall by my side in the bad and the good. Helping me push and motivate myself everyday to be better than the day before.
