We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizzie Daiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lizzie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started working for myself I didnt have as many kids as I do now. I kept thinking “one day it will get easier when xyz..” and the truth is it just never does. I try to think of it in seasons rather than years. There are times when I can devote more of myself to my work and growth and other times that my family needs it more. Thats the beauty of this type of work I have the flexibility to focus my attention where its needed at the time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love to illustrate whimsical art that reflects domestic objects and everyday scenes. Ive mostly struggled for years against my own mental health to reach a point now where I can value my work and time. In the beginning it was difficult because I lacked experience and confidence. Now I struggle to have time and a good balance however I have so much experience and a clear vision for my goals. The biggest lesson to learn in all areas of your life is “progress not perfection”. Every step you take no matter how small will eventually lead you to where you want to go, don’t stop moving.
I am a support needs mom and most of my time is spent trying to make the world of my children more inclusive and equitable, that task alone feels insurmountable however there’s this fire in me that needs to exist, create and I believe all women and caretakers in particular should know that they should take up space in their life to also have careers they feel passionate about and never stop creating if that fuels them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Id love the opportunity to take my friend Holly to a cozy bookshop like The Stacks, take her to eat at Starland Yard food trucks, go to Flannery O’Connors childhood home and in the evening go to the Bamboo Tiki Room for a drink to chat. The city of Savannah is so beautiful. I really enjoy Starland for the proximity to many shops and restaurants. I think the best place to go however is our local events where you can meet neighbors and build community. I love going to Isle hope Art fest to see local artists and listen to music. Its wonderful also to check out our wonderful community events held by the city such as movies in the park and the Jazz festival.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this to my husband. I know its cheesy but he’s my forever cheerleader. He has always supported me in the most trying of times. It’s important to have someone in your corner who rolls with the punches and keeps encouraging you to keep momentum.
