Meet Amy Rowan

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Rowan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have been running my own business since my oldest son was 18 months old. During my time as an entrepreneur, I have launched 3 businesses and had two more children. So my life is….busy, to say the least.
What I have learned about balance is that the more you strive for it, the more you are likely to fail and burn out. What does that mean? Different areas of your life are going to need to be a bigger priority at different times. Sometimes it will be your family, sometimes it will be your business, sometimes it will be a major health issue or challenge that you weren’t expecting. I’ve been through all of those and I know that life can throw curveballs at any time.
I believe in the importance of timing. Sometimes you have to let a ball drop, or put off something important to you, when something else takes precedence. As my children have gotten older, I have been able to put more time into growing my business as a Clinical Sexologist and sex coach. But, as the primary parent, I’m still VERY much needed in the afternoons and late evenings when my two teens decide they want to tell me everything.
Time management is my most important skill. I have to be very protective of my time. I have to be smart about using the time that I have. I have to turn down opportunities that sometimes I really want to say yes to, because I know that something else is either more important to me, or more profitable for me.
“No” and “not right now” are powerful tools in your toolbox. So is delegation and lining up as much support as you can, both personally and professionally. I’m grateful to have a husband, friends and family that cheer me on (and pick up my kids when I need them to.) Finding great help in your business is also essential, and harder than you might think. I have had the most amazing assistant for 3 years and I will never let her go. The lean years as an entrepreneur are hard, when you have to do all the jobs and aren’t earning enough to pay someone else to help you. That’s when time management, consistency and saying “no” are key.
I don’t believe in balance, but I do believe that if you keep your goals and values at your forefront and line up great support behind you, then you can mostly stay in the middle of the see-saw and move forward incrementally each day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The progression of my career has made sense, but it hasn’t always been easy. As the full-time primary parent to 3 boys, running my business while running the 3 ring circus that is my life has always been challenging. Like any entrepreneur, my hours can be unpredictable, but I always keep my family first. I had two babies while building my business.
However, the biggest challenge was being diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer at the age of 38. This brought everything in my life to a grinding halt, as I navigated doctors, surgeries, and the fear and effects of having a double mastectomy. I was lucky that I caught it as early as I did, and didn’t have to undergo chemo or radiation. But I had to slow down on building my business and focus on my health while I healed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Downtown Roswell and Alpharetta. So many little gems there. Brunch at Fellows Cafe, lunch at the Vick, dinner at Foundation Social Eatery. Walk around the green in downtown Alpharetta. Check out the new Roswell Junction. Walk the greenway.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest shoutout always goes to my husband and best friend, James. He believes in me unwaveringly, even when I start to question myself. I am so grateful to all of my friends and family who help keep my family train moving so I can pursue my dreams. I also want to shoutout Katie, my brilliant assistant, who jumps into whatever I am doing with eyes wide open, willing to learn whatever comes next. Next, I want to thank Dr. Trina Read, my co-host in the Sensational Sex Podcast. Her mentorship as a sexologist with over 25 years of experience has been invaluable. I am so grateful she asked me to create this podcast together.
