We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Mottern and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Mottern Advocacy, LLC exists to give every child with a disability the opportunity to thrive—not just in school, but in life. My journey as a Special Education Advocate is personal. Growing up with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD, I intimately understand the frustration and self-doubt that can accompany learning differences. But I also know the transformative power of the right support. A dedicated special education teacher changed my path, helping me turn my struggles into strengths and inspiring me to earn a master’s degree in Special Education from Vanderbilt University, the nation’s leading institution in the field.

Now, I bring that same determination to families navigating the special education system. With nearly a decade of experience as a special education teacher and a deep personal connection to my work, I advocate for children who need someone in their corner. At Mottern Advocacy, LLC, I strive to help students with disabilities access the accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction they need to succeed.

My approach is data-driven and deeply collaborative. I work closely with families, educators, and specialists to develop individualized strategies that lead to real, measurable success for each child. Every child I help contributes to a broader effort to create learning environments that respect individual differences, meet diverse needs, and foster a sense of belonging for all students. I’m helping build a community where meeting the unique needs of every child isn’t just an expectation—it’s a commitment to their success and well-being.

This work is about more than securing services—it’s about empowering families, driving systemic change, and proving that every child, no matter their challenges, has the potential to achieve greatness. Through Mottern Advocacy, LLC, I’m not just helping children navigate the system—I’m helping them thrive in life, beginning with their education.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Mottern Advocacy, LLC is both a professional endeavor and a deeply personal mission. Growing up with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD, my education was a constant struggle. For years, I felt invisible and misunderstood. Everything changed when I became eligible for special education services and met Mrs. Deborah Scott, a special education teacher who looked past my challenges and saw my potential. She taught me how to read, helped me see my dyslexia as a strength, and, most importantly, gave me the confidence to believe in myself.

Special education became my game changer—the difference between feeling defeated in school and earning a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, the nation’s top institution for Special Education. That journey taught me that with the right support and determination, challenges can be transformed into strengths.

As the owner of Mottern Advocacy, LLC, I now combine my personal experience, nearly a decade of teaching in special education, and my professional expertise to advocate for children with disabilities. My work is rooted in a commitment to helping families navigate the complex world of special education, striving to ensure every child has the opportunity to access the services and supports they need to thrive.

What sets me apart is my unique perspective—I’ve walked in the shoes of the families I support. I understand the frustration, fear, and hope that come with advocating for a child’s educational rights. This perspective drives my approach: empathy, patience, and a data-driven, individualized strategy to achieve meaningful outcomes.

Getting to where I am today professionally has not been easy. Transitioning from teaching to advocacy was a leap of faith that required stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges. Advocacy work is not only emotionally demanding but also logistically complex. I’ve faced many hurdles along the way, but incredible mentors like Karen Mayer Cunningham, “The Special Education Boss,” have been invaluable in inspiring and supporting me throughout my journey.

Through it all, I’ve learned that resilience and collaboration are the keys to success. Listening deeply, building trust, and remaining steadfast in the face of challenges have taught me invaluable lessons that I bring to every family I work with.

What I’m most proud of is the trust families place in me and the progress I see in the children I advocate for. Watching a child gain confidence, access critical supports, and achieve their potential is the most rewarding part of my work. At Mottern Advocacy, LLC, my mission is to support every student with a disability in accessing opportunities to succeed—not just in school, but in life. My story is proof that with the right support, determination, and advocacy, challenges can be transformed into strengths. I’m here to help families turn those possibilities into realities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Sky Barre Studio: Start the week with an energizing and empowering experience at this incredible studio in Atlanta. It’s where I teach aerial silks classes, and visitors can also try aerial yoga, barre fitness, indoor rowing, and even low circus tricks. The studio is a body-positive space that celebrates women supporting women, making it not just a workout but a confidence-building experience.

Rojo Mexican Restaurant: After an active morning, there’s no better place to refuel than this vibrant spot in Chamblee. Known for its flavorful dishes, welcoming atmosphere, and incredible margaritas, Rojo is perfect for enjoying a satisfying meal with great company.

Frosty Caboose: No visit is complete without stopping by this charming ice cream spot for the best chocolate milkshake in town. It’s the perfect way to treat ourselves and end the day on a sweet note.

Country Dog Market: For those with furry friends, this local gem is the go-to spot for high-quality treats, toys, and gifts. It’s a must for dog lovers and a thoughtful stop for any pet owners.

Brook Run Park or Blackburn Park: Take a leisurely dog walk at one of these beautiful parks. They’re both great spots to enjoy some fresh air, peaceful trails, and time with four-legged friends.

Tubing Down the Chattahoochee River: Spend a relaxing afternoon floating down the “Hooch” while enjoying the beautiful Georgia scenery. It’s the perfect way to unwind and soak up some sunshine.

La Garde Restaurant: For brunch, we’d visit this Chamblee gem with its inviting ambiance and standout menu. It’s the ideal place for a leisurely meal filled with delicious flavors and good conversation.

Atlanta Falcons Game: Football fans will love catching a Falcons game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The energy is electric, and it’s a great way to experience Atlanta’s passion for sports.

Six Flags Over Georgia: With my season pass, we’d spend a thrilling day riding coasters and exploring the park. It’s an exciting spot for adventure and fun, perfect for all ages.

Atlanta Botanical Garden – Holiday Lights: In the evening, we’d visit the Botanical Garden to take in their breathtaking holiday lights display. The festive atmosphere and stunning installations make it a magical experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey wouldn’t be the same without the incredible individuals who have shaped and inspired me.

First, I want to recognize Ms. Deborah Scott, the special education teacher who changed my life. She taught me how to read, believed in me, and showed me how my dyslexia is not a limitation but a strength. Her unwavering support transformed not only my education but also my self-perception, and career outcome.

I also want to honor Dr. Susan Rudnicki, Ph.D., who taught me to believe in and love myself. She played a pivotal role in helping me build the confidence to embrace my unique abilities and pursue my passions.

A huge shoutout also goes to Karen Mayer Cunningham, “The Special Education Boss.” She has been an incredible mentor and source of inspiration. Karen’s work and leadership in special education advocacy motivated me to pivot into this field. Through her mentorship and partnership in the Special Education Academy, I’ve grown immensely as an advocate and found a renewed sense of purpose in my career.

These remarkable women have profoundly impacted my life, and I am deeply grateful for their guidance, belief in me, and unwavering support.
