We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Lou Wood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal Lou, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I think that my work-life balance has changed over time significantly because for me- this is something brand new to me. Creating art is nothing new but using it as a business venture IS! I used to have an “all or nothing” attitude meaning that I’d only commit to one thing at a time inevitably leaving something off balance, but over time I’ve learned that it is a fine balance that shifts as life shifts. I create when my heart and soul longs to, and I am intentional about doing this since working as a nurse practitioner is sometimes very taxing!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The art that I create is MEANT to allow people to feel something (just as most art does) but my art is different because my perspective on the world is different! I had a pretty difficult childhood and have been through a lot in life and I pray that my art inspires others to see hope from seemingly hopeless situations.
I started with simply copying the world around me through my vision with just graphite sketches. As I’ve grown in life I’ve learned that for me details DO matter- specially the details of people! Ive been given a lot of grace by God AND people in my life – both of which I hope translates in my art!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh I love this one! I recently relocated to this area a few months ago but I would absolutely encourage attending the Aurora theatre where they have live plays, music, and engaging theatre! I went to see the color purple and it was so beautiful!
I’d also encourage a visit to the local dog park up the road, a quick bite for pizza, and then finally an evening out at Controllerise! It LITERALLY is one of the greatest places to be! Theres games, art, music, and just a great vibe place!
I’d invite them to church with me at one of the local places before heading back to the apartment for some R and R before the week begins!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh gosh! Yes, there have been many over the years who have supported me with their words, encouragement, & actions but none other than my dearest friends! A group of 5 specifically who have spoken life to my dream of being an actual bonafide artist by showing up to support me! They’ve listened, looked, and asked questions that have helped me stay in the right direction! Thanks to you Millie, Ray, Ebony, Sweet Von, and Melody!
