We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamond Cherie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diamond, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from the East side of Atlanta. Kirkwood to be exact, but I was raised in Decatur and not the city of Decatur either. Although I lived in a rough area, my parents tried their best not to allow the negative to seep into my upbringing. My father was very present and very strict. No boys, no tight clothes, no sleepovers. I was a straight- A student and graduated high school early. Decatur was known for the fire hair styles, nails and night life. I think the culture inspired me to be me. Yes, I’m smart and studious but I love a mean updo, I stay in some bodycon/ spandex, I get the long decorative nails and I will most definitely turn up in the night club scene (as long as I have a section). As a Loctician, I love recreating pin curl updos and French rolls because I wanted that as a kid when I was going to Ms. Trin’a shop off of Glenwood. Now that I think about it, the salon culture is what sparked my interest in loc styling. The nostalgia of the salon, the hair magazines, the smell of spritz, and all the transformations gives me a warm feeling inside. I want to bring that to the loc world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a loc stylist but I’m a creative over anything. I started out drawing as a child and not just stick figures; I’m talking full blown animal portraits and buildings. I read alot so my imagination allows me to see and create things without having to really physical see it. That’s what made me realize I could do hair, model, edit, crochet, paint, and plenty of other things. I think the main thing that sets me apart is my love for the 90’s-2000 aesthetic. I’m a true 90’s baby from Zone 6. I am that aesthetic. I feel locs in themselves are about individuality and not conforming. I live to express that in everything that I do. I respect and will do the mess out of some two strand twists but bring me a 90’s style to recreate or a nasty old school “ghetto” or elegant updo and I’m going to rock it every time. Being a stylist is easy but allowing my personality to come through and create a balance with professionalism wasn’t the easiest feat. I’m overcoming that now by allowing myself grace. Not every person is meant to be a client. If that were the case, there wouldn’t be so many different service providers. I’ve learned to stick to my principles, prices and never be afraid to network. I want the world to know (especially those shy girls that grew up under their parents thumb) to know that you’ll never be satisfied until you’re able to do and be you unapologetically. That’s what DCherie Naturals is about. It’s about being and doing you in the most authentic way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A weeklong good time in the city for me to really give someone the feel of ATL would be Demitri’s Restaurant of Covington Highway for breakfast. The breakfast always taste like my grandma made it and it’s chill. To get fly, we’re headed to my nail tech Nailsthawrightway, for drinks, we’re hitting up Sidebar, to stroll around we’re going to Little 5 points, Ponce City Market and walking the Beltline, and after we worked up an appetite, off to Sargeant Wyatt restaurant for the best barbecue you will ever have to go. Depending on the vibe, we can go to Boogaloo or Chicago’s Pizza & Sports (I’m a lounge girl now) but if we must go to the club and you want the turn up without your pockets being turned inside out,Elite Lounge might be the spot. Esco is my go to though. I love the lamb chops that’s what sold me lol. The Battery is more my vibe now when I want to hang out but I love Chattahoochee Ave just as much.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this to my sweet angel Connie Swan (my paternal grandmother). She was the epitome of an IT girl. The mothering, the style, the drive, the love all inspired me. She will always live in my heart forever.
