We had the good fortune of connecting with Detric Kovu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Detric, what role has risk played in your life or career?
The role that taking risks, has played in my life has been a major one. At times when I reflect on my journey it’s a bit overwhelming; when taking into account all of the different challenges I’ve faced when the odds were stacked against me. I guess you could say I truly live by the term “No Risk, No Reward.” I mean honestly to sit down and speak about the things that I’ve experienced and been through, to even you know, be where I am today. It would take hours, maybe even days to really unpack these experiences with details and possible questions that could be asked. However, I will say this; ‘Walking by Faith and Not by Sight’ has been one of the Key Principles and Axioms that has brought me here.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m very proud of my work to say the least. One of the major things that I keep in the forefront of my mind as I’m working is my ‘Why.’ When it comes to my work and others in the same industry. I truly know within my soul, That what I’m creating is Divinely-guided and inspired by things that are in Harmony with Creation itself. I would say the thing that I’m most proud of when it comes to my work; Is the fact that I’ve already received approval from the Divine (The Most High). What I mean by that, is simply, certain projects must come into existence! I’ve been the one that has been tasked with the responsibility to bring that idea into a tangible reality. The Approval comes from witnessing, after the project has been created certain events and changes occur that move my life to the next level. So when I reflect in prayer and meditation I get these “Aha” moments that reveal these things to let me know I’m in Alignment with my Purpose and my Path and the Work I’m doing is in harmony and ordained by the Divine (The Most High). However there is one project that I know with my entire being. That I’ve been given responsibility to bring this idea into this physical existence and it’s a production called ‘AKASHA’. This is a dance production but not just a dance only production. It’s a Universe of Creatives bringing their worlds together to create a Multi-verse that the audience gets to witness and immerse themselves in. Currently we are acquiring funding for the production so that we can take it abroad for a Residency, our first destination is Mexico City, Mexico. Right now, on the production team we have a Fashion Designer (IG: @LycheeKimono), DJ (IG: @GoddessKiko) and Product Design Engineer (IG: @GrainDesignConcepts). This is something I’m immensely excited about because each member also has a secret set of skills that they wish to display within this production. So reflect back to when I said “A Universe of Creatives bringing their worlds together to create a Multi-verse”, is literally what’s going on here. How did I get to where I am? I’d say it was a very, very long journey and I mean very long time. The mountains, valleys, rivers, the tundra and all these different arenas, landscapes and varied geography I’ve had to traverse. I say this metaphorically and literally because have also traveled and lived across the world. Nonetheless I am Here, I am Victorious, I am Triumphant, I am Still-standing and I am Rising like the Phoenix from the Ashes…Reborn! Overcoming these challenges were no small feat, however because I was always focused on the next thing. I didn’t really celebrate myself for coming out on top of these obstacles and challenges. Now that I’m in my 30s I find myself reflecting a lot more over the past two decades and just the Karmic Cycles, Generational-Curses and you know overall the Spiritual Warfare. As I mentioned earlier on Prayer and Meditation were and still are the founding principles of my journey and now I can say ‘Shout Out’ to my Mom. She helped me learn the Fundamentals of Prayer and I just took that and Evolved. The Lessons I’ve learned along the way? I mean this may sound pretty Dark and Grimm but I’ll try to keep it as light-hearted as possible; in this life all you have is Oneself and God, at the core of it all. To bet on yourself is to take Responsibility for the Consequences of all your Actions. I ’ve also learned that ‘True Freedom’ exists within Accountability of oneself and that is something that is rare in today’s society. Yet it is a trait that has been ingrained and shaped the World’s Greatest Men and Women of our Civilizations both Modern and Archaic. What I want the world to know about me is that I’m someone who has conquered and brought balance to the Light and Dark-side of my Psyche; so anything that has been thrown at me or will be I already have the Victory. My company is GEN 7 media, it is a Media Production and Management company specializing in Cultural Exchanges through the Visual Arts and Street Dance Education programs. What led to the birth of GEN 7 Media is a Dance Education program called ‘Genesis Project’. Visit the website: https://gen7.media to learn more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a best friend visiting Atlanta Georgia my first that would be take them hiking at Stone Mountain Park. That way we can open up our senses and let go of any heaviness from my lives up until that day. Then after a hike I will take them to a restaurant not far from the mountain called Front Porch Taqueria (IG: @FrontPorchTaqueira). This is a great place to eat Shrimp Gumbo and various Tacos specialties in Mexican-styled entrees and tapas, but they kind of have an ‘Atlanta’ flavor to it. The next day I would invite them out to explore Grant Park in the city of Atlanta. They have a few different options whether it’s a nice stroll around the park and recreational sports, soccer and basketball. You can hang out at the pavilion and people watch. Or you can go to Grant Park Zoo and satisfy the inner-child within you. Then after go out for a night’s bite at a restaurant called ‘6 Feet Under’ across from the Oakland City Cemetery. The next day I would invite them to the Georgia Aquarium which host a plethora of different marine species from all across the world. After a couple hours there I would invite them to an evening at Puttshack which is Downtown, this place is cool because it has a lot of different mini-golf courses and the games attached to them which allows for individuals couples or groups so just have a fun night. The next day I’d invite them for another hike at Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield National Park which is great for hiking they have various trails and amazing sight to see. Along those trails various bird species depending on the season, you may species from the northern hemisphere migrating south for a warmer climate. After the hike we can go back to our residencies and freshen up a bit and rest for the day because that evening I would invite them out to Centennial Olympic Park in Downtown Atlanta. Which offers an assortment of activities from exploring the park, the Coca-Cola Factory, the Tabernacle-concert venue, Waffle House and much more. For the last day, I’d mix it up; we’d go to Atlantic Station downtown and that area offers a Movie Theater, Dine-in Restaurants, a Bowling-Alley, Shopping-stores and various Ice Cream and Candy shops. This actually will be a full itinerary while also leaving room for my friend to rest relax and process things we’ve done, to allow them to enjoy their experiences in a Balanced way.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well if I’m being honest, my journey had a lot of players along this path and to say that it is one organization, one group or one person would be kind of shallow on my end. I’ve come across so many different people in this lifetime. That being said I already know that there’s a ebb and flow to my life and people come people go; however I will say I’m grateful for everyone who has served a purpose, no matter if they were a Teacher, a Real-Life Lesson or Both. These things have shaped me into who I am now and have helped me develop into the Multidimensional-being that I am.
