We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmyn Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well, the BIGGEST thing that inspired me was of course independence. I was floating around all these different jobs that I didn’t really care for. And I soon came to the realization that I really didn’t want to work under anyone else besides myself. It was definitely time for me to be my own boss.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started Jay’re Naturals in October 2019, but I’ve been working on ideas and testing years prior to actually making it official. I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I’ve been doing hair for about 6 or 7 years now, and I’ve grown out of touch with it a lot. However, my love for wig making and handmade natural cosmetics never went away and I decided to act on it. Years later, here we are! There have been A LOT of obstacles and barriers in my way but with patience and passion on my side, I can do anything. I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve lost a lot as well. Not everyone is going to support my brand, and that’s perfectly fine. In fact, I DON’T want everyone one to support my brand. The ones that know my brand and my mission, those are the ones that I want support from. I’ve been told before that I shouldn’t be selective on what type of support I should receive, and I don’t believe that to be true. I feel like as a entrepreneur, you should be selective on what type of support you wish to receive. Because that’s the type of support that’s always going to be around. What sets Jay’re Naturals apart from other brands is our mission: “Jay’re Naturals encourages you to Look Good, Feel Good, Do Better, and Be Great! With our products, we hope to create a positive lasting impact on individuals, our communities, and our environment.” My brand does 3 things: helping individuals by giving them a product that benefits their body, well-being, and confidence, helping communities by supporting and bringing awareness to local small businesses and organizations, and helping our environment by switching to more eco-friendly, sustainable, and plastic-free options and ways of thinking.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have gotten this far without my support system. My mom, my grandmother, my close friends and family; they all definitely deserve a shout! 2020 was a rough year for everyone, including myself. I lost my father in August and I’ve been going through it. Thank God for the people I have in my corner. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have made it.
