We had the good fortune of connecting with Eva Wagura and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eva, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When my daughter started daycare at two, I worried about how she’d sleep without her cherished blanket that she had received from her aunt in Kenya. The daycare’s nap mat requirement meant she couldn’t bring it, and I realized there were no culturally rich options that offered the same comfort.
That moment sparked my mission to create something that would comfort my daughter while celebrating our African roots. Inspired by her love for that special blanket and my deep connection to our Kenyan heritage, Sinzia Comfort was born.
Sinzia Comfort fills that gap by crafting children’s bedding that weaves African artistry into everyday life. But it’s about more than beautiful products—it’s about supporting mothers and nurturing a sense of belonging. I want moms to win, and I want every child to feel seen, valued, and connected to a diverse world. Through Sinzia Comfort, we aim to build a global village where these values thrive, and all cultures are respected
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As human beings, we are molded by our early years, our learning, and our everyday routines – what we consume, what we see, what we touch, and what we smell. These encounters define our identities, our self-perceptions, and our convictions.
Within our homes and our broader community, our children embark on a journey filled with books, playful toys, snuggly bedding, and charming outfits. Yet, there’s a noticeable void—the absence of the enchanting African voice.
Sinzia Comfort takes a meaningful step to bridge this void. We provide an assortment of finely crafted children’s bedding infused with the richness of African artistry. These creations offer not only comfort and practicality for your little ones but also an affordable contemporary touch, nurturing the connection to the authentic African narrative.
Building Brand Awareness represents one of our key challenges. Being a comparatively new brand, especially one highlighting cultural representation and distinctive designs, carving out a niche in a saturated market is difficult. Differentiating Sinzia Comfort from other brands offering similar products has necessitated us to emphasize our unique selling points, like our dedication to representation and the versatility of our products. We’ve implemented strategic marketing efforts, such as social media drives, collaborations with influencers who align with our brand ethos, and involvement in community events. These initiatives have enabled us to reach a wider audience while maintaining our mission.
Addressing Diverse Needs is another hurdle we’ve faced. The parent community is varied, encompassing different needs, tastes, and cultural backgrounds. Our task was to design products that appealed to this broad spectrum of parents while preserving a unified brand identity. We’ve had to attentively listen to our customers, often via direct feedback, to comprehend their specific needs and modify our offerings to include items that cater to particular cultural preferences, ensuring our designs resonate with a diverse group of parents. It’s a careful act of including everyone, ensuring no one feels excluded or misrepresented.
Being a Black-owned business instills in me a sense of pride and a profound responsibility. It extends beyond merely providing products for mothers and babies; it’s about celebrating our culture and establishing a legacy that uplifts our community. Sinzia Comfort symbolizes breaking barriers and pioneering new norms in an industry where our narratives have frequently been sidelined. I aspire for Sinzia Comfort to motivate other Black entrepreneurs to bring their unique perspectives and cultural heritage, particularly in the maternity sector. My journey demonstrates that there’s space for us to produce premium, culturally relevant products that not only cater to our community but also compete at a larger scale. I wish for others to realize that they can build prosperous businesses that create a substantial impact while remaining true to their authentic selves.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is a vibrant mix of cultures, and its food, music, and arts scene are unparalleled. There is nothing like experiencing culture through food at the following spots – Rumi’s Kitchen for Persian, Desta Kitchen for Ethiopian food, African Soulfood for African food, Zeke’s Kitchen and Bar for Haitian- American fusion food and lastly, Poor Calvins for Asian Fusion – I am pretty sure I forgot others.
A visit to aKAZI Gallery in the Sweet Auburn District would allow us to admire contemporary and innovative art from African creative hubs like Dakar, Accra, Lagos, Johannesburg, and Maputo. The vibrant colors and thought-provoking pieces for the latest artist would for sure leave us inspired.
While in the area, we’d head to Vivo Fashion Store at Atlantic Station, where we could indulge in a shopping spree featuring clothes and home goods from Kenyan brands. The unique finds would be perfect souvenirs to remember our time together.
No visit to Atlanta is complete without hitting its iconic landmarks. We’d uncover the history of the iconic beverage at the World of Coca-Cola, marvel at the aquatic wonders at The Georgia Aquarium, and enjoy outdoor adventures and breathtaking views at Stone Mountain Park. Reflecting on the legacy of the civil rights leader at the Martin Luther King Memorial and deepening our understanding of the struggle for equality at the Civil Rights Museum.
Finally, the music scene in Atlanta is always buzzing, so we’d catch a live concert at one of the city’s famous venues. Whether it’s The Tabernacle, Mable House Amphitheater, Wolf Creek Amphitheater, Chastain Park, or Cadence Amphitheater, the energy and talent would be sure to captivate us. We love to dance so we would wrap up with Afro-Caribbean food and dancing at Rock Steady.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my parents deserve endless gratitude for the sacrifices they made to provide me with invaluable experiences, a fulfilling life, and a solid education. Their dedication laid the foundation for my growth.
My husband, David, and our children have been my rock, always standing by me with unwavering support through all the ups and downs.
My life coach, Jean Adero. Jean has an incredible ability to see my potential and has consistently pushed me to discover and pursue my purpose.
I am also deeply grateful to my entrepreneur friends, the brilliant minds in my mastermind group. They have been a crucial soundboard and have continually challenged my limiting beliefs, helping me expand my horizons.
Lastly, my village—those cherished individuals who stand by me and my family—deserve a heartfelt thank you. Their support has been instrumental in enabling me to chase my dreams and become the person I am today.
Without these remarkable people, pursuing my passion and achieving my goals would have been an insurmountable challenge. To each of them, I extend my deepest gratitude.
